North Pointe Preparatory Reviews

This is our 2nd year at NPP. My kids got involved right away and they have loved every minute of being there. They have an opportunity to involved as much as they are able and willing. Practice conflicts have been worked around in order to make participation possible. Teachers are accessible through email or phone messages. Communication is good, but not always 100%, although there has been great improvement this year. The idea of 5 Directors instead of 1 principal is a good idea, but it's not always easy to find which director to ask a specific question. A little persistance helps. NPP can prepare my kids for college if we ask questions and make it our goal. They offer the education, activities, and the assistance to reach our goal. As with any school, this one is not perfect, but our family is very satisfied and thankful that we found NPP.

North Pointe Prepratory is an average school with potential for excellent ratings. I believe they are not an excellent school because they do not have the appropreate leaders in play with the organizational skills and vision for the future needed. This school has an extreemely low rating for students passing college tests, thus college credits earned on a high school level in this school are rare. The students are not taught on a whole that academics alone will not get you into the college of your choice. It takes acadamics, sports, and comunity service to have a chance to get into the school of the students choice. Just getting by and having the school with a high rating is no enough to be an Excellant school! The school does not inform the parents or encourage them to be involved!

My child had to wait most of the year to attend NPP they had a waiting list since last spring. We chose this school when we saw how awsome the events were. Even though our child was not enrolled yet they allowed them to shadow at a spring shadow day. Since attending North Pointe my child has been able to bring home grades every few weeks in a check point and I am able to access teachers and staff by e-mail at any time and they respond quickly and efficiently to my questions. My daughters health issues were addressed immediately. The teachers and staff have been extremely helpful and Preptv really has wonderful daily announcements so I know what's happening continually. They do all their communication online and in this day and age it is a great tool.

While I have seen the changes in the past few years with NPP, I sure do notice it's ability to spend time with the students teaching them what will be required for college. Duuuhhhh it's a college prep school!!! Not for the ungifted student. Or for those who get C's or D's and have no parental support at home. Our household is a 2 parent working to survive household so we are glad we chose NPP, but our children are smart and are willing to work hard and do the work and have good study habits at home so they succeed! Maybe parents who don't want academics and extracurricular and college as an option shouldn't be in this school. I have a student who graduated top of her class last year and is now attending ASU with a scholarship in academics. That is what we all want. Don't we?

I was very impressed with the high standards they offered in 2004. I chose this school for my daughter for that reason. Then I watched the faculty and administration change yearly or more often, as did the curiculum. I had her there for 3 years. I regret that alot and am disappointed that the school did not meet its promises and would not recommend it .

North Pointe Preparatory is a school with heart. The enthusiasm of the administration and teachers transcends to the students and it is truly one of those schools that makes a difference in a student's life. We are building our future here!

The Prep is an excellent school that just keeps getting better. It offers students more opportunities than any other small school I have seen. The current administration is both competent and caring. Lots of very involved teachers, too. I have been to other schools and done the research and I wouldn't send my kids anywhere else.

NPP is a horrible school. I am a student at the school and i will be leaving this year. The teachers are okay. Some are very good, but for some reason they get fired or they do not get asked back by the school. The administration tries to be friends with all the students when they should be teaching us. I am an athlete and they do have favorites. I am one of them. The way they run the school is horrible. They give no information. The only information they give is on there website, and most do not even read it. I would encourage every parent to pass this school and look for something else.

In response to the schools 'unique structure' It can deffinetly be VERY frustrating trying to get an answer when there are 5 different directors and not one of them will return your call. We had an incident which should have been handled by the Director of Student Services and the situation was ultimately handled solely by the Ass. Superintendent. How does that happen? It appears even though there are different Directors, there is still only one in charge. I hope the school re-thinks their 'unique structure'

This school is improving everyday, particularly over the past year and a half. There is a dedication to the 'whole' child with very strong programs in both arts and athletics in addition to college prep academics. My children are receiving a quality education in a great environment. My wife and I could not be more pleased.

This is the first year that the school has operated under the new administrative structure. There is a Principal Administrative Team, so there isn't just one principal in charge of the school. Instead there are five directors who are each responsible for a different area; Academics, Athletics, Arts, Student Development (including discipline), & Guidance. The Directors work well together and are able to provide much more support to the staff and school as a whole than one principal could. The structure is unique, but it suits our school culture and our priorities. While it understandable that this leadership style can lead to frustration if someone insists on talking to the person 'in charge of the school' rather than talking to the person responsible for the issue at hand, the staff and the majority of our families are thankful for the additional support.

This is a great school with wonderful teachers who will bend over backward to personally help your child. Sure there are problems sometimes but there are problems at every school. You won't find better than this one for a high school or junior high. If you think you will, go try a local public high school for a week and see what you think. Those schools will never give the individual attention to your child that they will get from the teachers at North Point. I am very grateful for the Prep and don't know where we'd be without it.

I am just completing my first year at the Prep and I have found the students to be great. It clearly makes a difference when the environment is such that the parents made a conscious choice to send their kids to the school. Add the kids into the mix of a very supportive administrative team, and you have happy teachers. I can't wait for next year. Go Falcons!

The school has a large turn over of teachers and the Admin does not work with the teachers. The teachers themselves are very dedicated. The Administration lacks commitment. tJust tries to cut cost at the expense of the students.

The Administration is very hard to communicate with. It is real sad because the quality of the individual teachers are great. It is really sad because there is so much potential and the administration does not call back parents when parents want to get involved to improve the quality of their children's education. The Administrative Staff either has a hard time coordinating things or do not care.

When we started at this school 3 years ago, I was very impressed. There seemed to be a more selective process about which students would be able to attend, due to morals, integrity, grades, etc. This year, 2007-2008, child now in 9th grade, too many administrators, don't know and don't care what each other is doing, parent association disbanded by district administration, seems all about the money now. Not the philosophy when we started 3 years ago. Really disappointed.

Poor leadership, the administration never calls parents back, they have a secretaries return calls. Classes are always cancelled. teacher quality is not so bad.

Seriously, This is a great school that just keeps getting better. Newsweek named it one of the best schools in Arizona. Academic and behavior standards are high but not unrealistic. There are a lot of really nice kids at this school.

I am pleased with this school. My kids have attended the academy as well. I pulled them out one year and was disappointed with the other schools they visited. The school & teachers push them to excell. That is what I want for my boys ages 16 & 12 in this school. My 5th grader will be at the prep when he is in 7th grade.

I am an alumni student of North Pointe. I enrolled in 8th grade and graduated in may of 2007. I can't express how impressed I am with the administration on a large scale, but on a one on one basis with the students, it's not so hot. I love that it's a small school where everyone knows everyone and there are really no cliques. It was a good school, not a great school, with great teachers.

I'm curious to know the criteria for a top school. I'm not seeing this in the leadership. There is no parent participation. We have no voice at this school. Communication is viewed as 'go to the website'. This is ineffective. Have they realized effective communication occurs is several modes not just one? We had a band performance outside this week. It was extremely cold. The students had a great performance. Do you think the school should have planned to have the performance in the gym or the theater. Poor Planning. If the Jr High is any reflection on the school, I'm afraid to know what goes on in HS.

Money spend on big coach buses instead of athletic equipment or jerseys. Classes canceled. Teacher turn over every year. Kids with good grades told they can't play sports when they have played for 3 years, because they are homeschooled. Its the administration.

Lots of classes/extra-curricular classes that were promised at orientation have been cancelled. Never got calls returned from the Administration. High teacher turn-over.

I love this school! I hope to never leave. I Have great friends and teachers. When I first started my friend begged me to do theatre with her. It just so happens, were not even in the same theatre class. Shes in a different preiod than I am. But because of her I love theatre and I'm glad I'm doing it!!

This is our second year at North Pointe and we are very happy with the school. I have had no problem getting responses from teachers and staff when I've had questions. I like the fact that check sheets come home every two weeks so I can keep tabs on my son's academics. The sports are wonderful too.

My son is a new freshman at North Pointe, coming from Carden Traditional School. So far, I am thrilled with almost everything. My son has great, involved teachers, challenging classes, and great extracurricular activities that he wants to participate in. Our only concern is that his math teacher knows a lot of math, but seems to have some difficulty teaching what he knows to the students. But, all in all, it has been great! Thank you to the staff and leadership at North Pointe Prep!

I pulled my daughter at the beginning of the school, there is alot of favoritism with the administration. I never had my calls returned. I truly believe 'status' is the only thing this school is about, not educating our children.

Yes finally a school with respect for parents and children. Very organized and profesional.

NPP has really gone down in the last couple years, seems like the school only cares about looks and status not about our children's education, it is very sad.

I agree with the Great Schools ranking - 9 of 10!My kids have attended this school for the past 5 years and we love it there. I believe that the new administration is much more responsive to parents than last year's was so I don't agree that all turnover is bad. The school sends home grades every 2 weeks and teachers are great about returning calls.

It is sad when an administrator must write a review of its school. The turnover at the Prep reflects poor leadership. It is that simple.

I also am very concerned about the turn-over of Directors. I just wish they could keep the same staff for two weeks so the website could have a contact list. As the administrator's comment so elequently expressed...they are all about the experience, which is great, I just hope the education will get the students into college.

I agree and have mixed feelings about the school. In all the years my child has attended this school. They have had alot of teacher and administration turn over. I don't believe the school is a College Prepratory. The school doesn't treat all the students fairly because of much favoritism by the teachers. Very unorganized they have plenty of updates on the school sports ect. but no faculty and administration contact information found on the school website. I would not recommend this school to another parent I wish I could.

We were in North Pointe Prep for 7-8 grade, and I have mixed feelings. Some of the teachers were terrific, while others seemed to have no academic standards. However, almost all of the teachers I met cared about their jobs and the kids. The school was very disorganized and it's frustrating. There was an unspoken pressure on the teachers to give a's and b's - in my opinion not good. I want to know my child is learning and have a true read on how he is doing. It is not a college prep school in terms of curriculum or standards, so don't expect that. However, it is a small-school atmosphere, so your child will get to know people right away and have more opportunity to play if involved in team sports.

My kids have been attendind this school since the 7th grade and are now in 10th and in the beginning it was the school that we dreamed of! But as the years passed by its 'greatness' dissapeared! The quality of the teachers was decreasing and most were unqualifyed!

There is arts program there and I was impressed with that. But if you arnt intrested in you kids experiencing a great arts program I reccomend looking somewhere else.

We have decided to leave after 5 years of dealing with Pointe Educational Services. I suggest choosing a different school than this one.

This school does not apeal to me or my kids! Yes there has been some good things about it like drumline and other ats and such, but what really gets me is the lack of adminastrative responsibility! There is great potiential but there are a few roadblocks that have to be overcome first.

My kids are very happy st this school. My son is into sports and my daughter is into the arts and they both excel academically. No other charter school has this combination of Academics, Athletics, and Arts. Also, this school has a district administration that is committed to finding the right teachers and leadership. The standards are high and 'okay' just isn't good enough. This school isn't afraid to replace an ineffective teacher or principal. Too many schools just keep them because getting rid of them and finding good ones is too much work. If the new principal didn't work out and left this summer, well, I am glad that they figured out it wouldn't work before school starts.

I have attended npp and still am. In some aspects the teaching is above and beyond a normal level but some of the teachers need to step it up. I think that the people incharge of hiring should make sure that they are hiring a good teachers so they dont get fired 1/2 a year later. I sugest before enrolling to npp really find out the details, good and bad, about the school before enrolling, just to make sure it is up to your standards.

I have two children that attend NPP. We switched to this Charter Dist. years ago believing in the vision of a better education. Aware of the schools growing pains and management turmoil we are concerned about the Admin. turnover. The newest principal has left after 6 weeks of summer employment and the last Dir of Acad. left after only 3 weeks. We are concerned about the stability and with less than 2 weeks till school starts without a principal we fear we will have to check other options for our childrens education.

This will be my daughters second year at NPP. The academics are above the norm and that is fantastic. They really push the kids to learn. In public school my daughter never had homework. I love how much work this school gives! Knowledge is power........ This school has a lot of power!

Originally my children and I were very excited to start NPP, but after a year, I am not so sure. I cannot get any feedback from my children's teachers, and my phone calls to the administration are being ignored. My child's IEP was not properly followed this past year. Seems like NPP is only for the very smart. My child will not be returning to NPP. Thank you.

I am a teacher who started at the Prep this last school year. The school is only six years old (with increased enrollment every year), and has some growing pains to work though, but I feel like real progress is being made. Many of the faciliites are new, and the teachers there are simply phenomenal. The number of discipline problems among the students is very low overall, and the number of opportunities for them is simply amazing to me. It's true that NPP has gone through some administrative turmoil in the past year, but I feel like all the changes that have been made are for the best. My instinct is that the Prep is on the verge of transitioning from what is already a good school to a truly great one, and I am proud to be part of that.

I had my Son at @NPP for 1 year and as a parent I have seen a lot of teacher turnover and bad decision making by the administration. This could have been a great school for my child but high teacher turnover and low academic scores and poor leadership form the superintends have made us go to a public school. Take my advice go somewhere else you will do yourself a favor. Also the website is terrible it always had inaccurate information and it never updated.

I pulled my son out a couple months ago due to the lack of good administration. They recently changed their philosophy and the way of teaching. My son and I were very unhappy with the new changes. I also have a child at their elementary school, and they're principal is gone also. All the last-minute changes really saddens me and my kids.

I am a teacher at the prep and have decided to leave. The school has begun to spiral and I don't think that it will recover. This school needs quality leadership and guidance. The teachers are wonderful.

North Pointe Preparatory used to call themselves a college prep school. We were excited at first. We saw great things at first, but after two years of watching good teachers and administrators leave or be asked to leave, we are taking our children out. The curriculum is not college prep in quality and the school doesn't even call themselves a college prep anymore. How can a school change its philosophy mid year? Six administrators have left in the last 7 months from the three schools. The upper administration is disrespectful of its parents and employees. The last few months have seen a great decline in many aspects.

My daughter has been going to NNP for three years now and it has changed. The academics have gone down . They are not required to fullfill all the previous credits in the years before this next schoool year. They have taken away the nearly year round school year, which I liked very much. To say that my girls are challenged in this school, some classes they are others they are not. The school definitly needs better administration and a better hand book that explains why parents have to have a doctors note every time that their child is sick. I do not see alot of parent involvement and with the gates being lock so quickly after school it makes parent

Academic programs are good, but high teacher turn-over. My children have been through 4 teachers this year so far. Administration is weak. Good club choices.

The quality of the curriculum is good, the teachers are acceptable, a couple are very good teachers, but the administration is weak.

I have been very impressed with the majority of teachers. They show they care about the students being successful. However, I think the Administration very week. Like others have say, they show a lot of favortisms.

I have 2 kids who attend this school and they are both doing very well there. Principal Kisselbach and her staff are caring and professional. The Falcon Check Pointes come home every two weeks and are a great way to know how my kids are doing in their classes. We never had that kind of feedback in the regular public school. There are a lot of extracurricular activities available for school this size. My wife and I have been very pleased with North Pointe Preparatory and I recomend it to everyone I know.

north pointe academy is a part of north pointe prep. My little girl went there for a year and by the end of the semester we could not wait to take her out and to a (believe it or not) public school. She would have been going to the prep the next year. Really bad administration and the requests for reams of paper and the request for us to go out and buy from bookstores our own textbooks for history because the school does not supply them was too much. This school is run on a shoestring and the money coming from the government that they get for each student makes me wonder where it goes. Go somewhere else and spare your kids the ordeal.

Good Philosophy, poor administration. My kids are out as of today.

This school is highly recommended. There is just enough structure and fun to make a great learning experience for teenagers! Sure, a bit of confusion at the beginning of the year, but everything has been rectified. I know my son would not choose another school now, but had reservations when it came time to make our decision to attend NPP. The staff is absolutely wonderful! When you need to count on them you can! I think, the community as a whole is awesome. I have never felt as comfortable with parents, staff, and students as I do with the NPP bunch. Thanks for everything! Kudos to NPP and NPA. The BEST PRINCIPAL'S!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Good philosophy, but high teacher turn-over. As soon as my son got used to a teacher, they were gone in a blink of an eye.

This is my son's first year at NPP. I have to say that there was a bit of concern coming in since the transition from 6th to 7th grade can be very trying but NPP has been wonderful. They have made the transition for him seamless and effortless. The staff makes itself readily available for any concerns and has been very welcoming and family like. There was a bit of pandemonium the first week with getting classes straight but it was taken care of without any ill effects. My son loves all of his teachers and couldn't be happier. We're looking forward to a long and learning relationship with NPP and I can't wait to enroll my youngest when he is ready. Thanks NPP you made what could have been a nervous disaster into a smooth and easy switch.

PrepTv, along with other classes have been canceled. After we registered our child. There is a lack of leadership at this school.

The school has high teacher turn over due to the lack of support from the leadership.

2005-2006 was our first year at North Pointe Before making the decision to move our kids to North Pointe, we did much research, soul searching, prayer. Sacrifices had to be made. For example, just getting them to and from school and activities requires driving 700-1000 miles per week. has it been worth it? Absolutely! All three of our children have done better academically and socially than they have ever done in any previous school. They have all been Honor Students for the entire year. They have all mixed socially without pressures and conflicts experienced in previous schools. They have all matured mentally. Each of them has (on their own) made significant decisions concerning their life-style, acquaintances, and activity participation with only minimal guidance from Mom and Dad. We look forward to our future at North Pointe.

Safe school that really cares about kids.

North Pointe has an always improving sports program which is what attracted us to the school. I was hoping for more push academically - my kids get A's and B's in advanced classes with almost no effort and with very little actual teaching. Communication needs much improvement. The parents' group tries to be a 'presence' but very few parents choose to participate.

The students at North Pointe seem to act on any changes in a passive manner. They don't get involved as much as i'd expect them to. They don't seem to attach themselves to the teachers or curriculum. The extracurricular activities are a good time-consuming portion of a student's day to day routine.

I am currently a senior at this school. I started going here last year, and I'd have to say it was the best choice I have made my whole life. This school is amazing and is continuing to excel.

My son is in seventh grade and it is his first year at NPP (obviously). I have found the staff to be very available to talk with parents when necessary. My son was pushed to do his best. This is important because too many times children do not develop the skills needed to acheive and it becomes ok. When children have to work for their grades they feel rewarded in their efforts rather than just giving them a passing grade to become a 'perfoming' school etc. I do notice that cheerleaders are a main focus but as the school multiplies and other extracurricular activites acheive this focus can become school wide. I haven't seen favoritism yet and hope that I do not. There is no comparison with the other JHS in the area. Drawback not a 4 or 5A school for highschool sports!

Classes are small and very personable and teachers are actually very caring and assign a reasonable amount of homework for a college prep. My son has received tutoring at lunch and teachers and administartion are easily availabe and always eager to help my son and I. This school has a lot of school spirit which means a lot to my son and us, its the way my husbdand and I were raised. Education and safety is the main focus. Parent involvement is great, parents help out at games, events, etc. They are very eager to let all in on the events. I am very pleased and feel very secure with my son at this school. I am very grateful to have found such a good school, we drive very far everyday to bring him and will continue to do so until he graduates from 12th grade.

The school has grown since my son has attended three years. I think that has been a good thing as long as the administration doesn't lose sight of the students needs. I would hate to see it change to a public school atmosphere. The biggest problem is favortism to the cheerleaders and sports.

North Pointe Prep has a great vision, but is unable to achieve them. The communication in the school is slow to non existent. 10 graders are pushed so hard there is no time for any extra curricular activities, and at least 3-4 hours worth of homework per evening. The most important problem that the school is experiencing, is obtainng and retaining quality teachers. Some years my student went through three teachers in one class. Last year unacceptable teachers were allowed to stay, and let go at the end of the school year. Parent involvement is very low.

Classes are short and teachers assign a lot of homework each night, which is not necessarily the best way to help kids learn. No tutoring, library time, or study time is available. Extracurricular activities are mostly run by parents. Girls cheerleading is the main focus. Parent involvement tends to be a very exclusive group, hand-selected by administration. Front office personnel are not readily available.

I think this school has great extracurricular opportunities and a thorough admin staff, good teachers.

We have been pleased by the caring teachers and staff at NPP.

My three children attend North Pointe Prep, and I have to say that it is the best charter school I have seen in Arizona. I have done a lot of research on charter schools and they are truly what they say they are all about. They definitely follow their mission statement: Knowledge, Character, Leadership. The high school students get to take classes at GCU during the school-day to accumulate college credits! It is truly a college prep. The teachers and staff really care about their students, they are not just another body or number as in large public schools. I would recommed this school to everyone!

My daughter has been going to NPP for 4 years. We both think NPP has a good academic program and extra curricular program. My daughter is a cheerleader and has the same expectations set for her as everyone else. I love the school because it is a safe and nurturing environment for my daughter to learn, and grow. I would highly recommend this school. Mr. & Mrs. Davenport are very caring and good hearted. This is the BEST school around.

I have a student who has attended NPP for many years. The teachers are the most dedicated I have seen in a public school. They are the backbone and strength of NPP. Dean Johnson works extremely hard to make all students feel welcome. Yes, there are some things that could be better. Parent involvement at all decision making levels would be appreciated. Even with that said NPP has been great for my college bound child. Great teachers, good friends and a great atmosphere for kids.

Quality of academic program: EXCELLENT! Availabity of extracurricular: My son does music, basketball and flag football. In my opnion Wonderful availability! Parent involvement: I see an above average level of parent involvement. If we were staying in the area I would NEVER move my son from this school. It is an excellent choice for kids to make great like minded friends that work for good grades and athletics.

Two of my children are enrolled at NPP, and we are very happy with their progress. This is a school for the academically minded student, if your child is interested in sports or the arts he/she will not be happy here. However, the school is everything it claims to be for those heading to College. The classes are demanding and the teachers are very supportive, if the parents contact them and stay on target with their child. I am contacted on bi-weekly basis by my children's parents and their are doing great. I wouldn't move my children anywhere else and encourage anyone interested in their child's sucess in school to enroll them here.

After I read some of the recent bitter reviews, I just had to write something. The discipline is not inconsistent at this school. The parents who write that it is are just trying to get back at the school because their child was held accountable. I give you the name of each person who wrote something nasty about the school and the cheerleaders, and they are all just upset because either their daughter didn't make the team, their child was disciplined for behavior or dress code or they didn't get some special treatment they were offered. If you are interested in the school's mission and philosophy, take the time to talk with one of the deans and visit the school.

My daughter is in her second year at NPP. She loves it there and I am coming around. Last year was a rough one. I didn t have the teacher support I would have liked. But this year has gotten off to a good start. I have read all the posts here and even though I like the school I do see the special treatment of the cheerleaders. I am disappointed in the fact that they are building a new gym and the old gym is being solely used for the cheerleaders. They could use it for a cafeteria for the kids to have a place to eat out of the hot sun and away from the bees and the cheerleaders could still practice there. I mean really how much time does it take to lay out the mats they need.

My daughter was a student at North Pointe for 1 year. I was not impressed with this school. The discipline varies from student to student, there is no consistancy this includes the dress code. My child was reprimanded in a very unprofessional manner. I would not recommend this school to parents.

The school year has just started and already they have more problems then they can handle! it's horrible and very stressful! Half the kids are repeating classes that they passed! One of my child's classmates was even brought down a class, even though that child had passed the math class with a 'b'. My son received a 'c', a passing grade, in his math class and was put in it again! in the handbook it says nowhere that if you receive a 'c' then you will repeat that class. This is just not fair! What makes things worse is that the person in charge with rearranging schedules will not rearrange them for another two weeks! I mean, these children are missing out on at least two weeks of a class they are supposed to be in, and instead have to repeat one they passed...I think they really need to shape up!

North Pointe Prepartory is a fabulous school. The education is excellent, and the quality of classes and the staff is well above any other school that I am familiar with.

Our daughter is finishing 8th grade and has been encouraged and challenged to step up and do her best. As a parent, I appreciate that all students are expected to take Spanish every year for 6 years (helpful for employment here) and that continuation to college is the main emphasis in planning their overall curriculum. Their athletic departments are not as developed as regular public middle and high schools, however, that is increasing, and the possibility of your child participating is increased due to the size of the school. I have found that any problems or complaints are handled in a very professional manner, and parents are valued and listened to. No school is perfect, but NPP is striving to provide a quality education in a safe environment. I'm so glad we found them when my daughter was entering 7th grade so she can go to this school all 6 years.
