Challenge Charter School Reviews

My kids have been attending CCS for the last 5 years and they have been very happy here. I have also been impressed with CCS for several reasons. Just a few months into Kindergarten and they are all reading, kids that I know from other schools were way behind them. They do presentations right from the start so they never learn to be anxious. The kids are also taught about character and as a parent that is very important to me. Every teacher that my kids have had have been great. I think that a uniform policy should have nothing to do with the way that a parent rates a school and all of the nasty reviews are just from people who are upset about that. I spent an extra $150 this year, my kids are worth it... JV

We love this school! My husband and I are proud to say that our kids (2nd and K) attend here. As parents we have choices and as adults we choose which will work in our budget and family dynamics. The curriculum at CCS is challenging but very rewarding. The kids thrive there. Any one walking their kids to class can see it. It's a shame that the kids do hear parents complaining about uniforms or whatever. All a child should hear is confirmation - especially about teachers and school who should be respected for their outstanding results. We as parents receive much more than we put in. I had a minor problem with the logo sticking on the shirt and the school and Dennis were very accommodating and quickly resolved it nicely. Good job!

Dear CCS Parents, My two children have been at CCS for 5 years now. I could not be happier with the academics and the quality of the teachers. Yes, extra-curricular activities are scares, but we take advantage of whatever is available. On that note, please realize that CCS is grossly underfunded. If every parent took advantage of the tax credit -which is of no cost to you, but brings funds to the school - I am confident that the school's leadership would consider expanding Spanish, music, arts and more. The Millers really have the kids best interest at heart. To those who are unhappy with the new uniform policy ... I have to be honest, I was not thrilled with it either. I am now paying twice as much for uniforms than before. Please recognize that you have the option to send your children to your own district's public schools.

This is the 6th year our son has attended CCS. The academics and teachers are great. The extracurricular activities are pretty scarce. A music program was instituted this year, but now there's no foreign language offered. The computer club no longer exists, either. The facilities are kept in excellent condition. As for parental involvement, I have spent many hours in the classrooms volunteering. The parents are treated with respect. Because this school is privately owned, the administrators do call the shots. It does limit the say of parents. I'm not happy with the decision about the uniforms coming from one source, either, but we decided that the fine academics override the overpriced uniforms. The administrators have the best interests of our children at heart. My son loves it there and is thriving. He's getting a top-notch education with lots of encouragement, and it's all in a safe environment.

Challenge Charter school is a phenomenal school. My family has been a part of this school for 8 years and we love it. This year has been a year of change and nobody likes change. But when it comes down to what's important, oue kids are recieving a top-notch education at a school where the staff and administration take the time to get to know them and take an interest in the entire family. I look forward to this upcoming year and many years to come.

My children have been attending CCS for the past 5 years. The education is fabulous. The teachers are excellent!!!!Miss Owens is a fabulous Kindergarten teachers. My children have loved all their teachers and have been given an amazing start. This past year I have been fustrated with changes in the school. I don't think that with the status of our economy thast this is the time to create the this type of financial burden. If this was my only complaint I would gladly find the funds to pay more the $400 for 5 shirts and 5 bottoms for my two children, however I feel that the integrity of the schools leadership has been compomised. The school seems to be more concerned with winning awards than with the performance of the individual child. This leaves me questioning whether to re-enroll or not. Very sad!

Lastnight my 6 year old read a chapter book to me. I find this an amazing accomplishment considering a year and a half ago she did not read at all. Challenge really is a wonderful school with amazing teachers and I am so happy I was lucky enough to find it. That said, I am have to agree with most of the comments hear about the new uniform policy. I had already bought uniforms for next year when they were on clearnace, now I have to buy a whole other set at at least 3 times the price. I will do it because I love this school, but it's really going to hurt my budget. I feel for parents with mulitple children in the school. I'm sure many are in the same boat as me, make too much to qualify for free uniforms, but still barely getting by.

Challenge is a great environment and has great acadamics. Wonderful learning environment. The new uniforms are a shame though. They cost 30 % more than where I usually buy them. We are in a hard economic time-- this is not the time to increase expenses on families at our school. I am living paycheck to paycheck and don't have the extra money for the new uniforms.

My oldest daughter had a wonderful experience and so far my middle child is thriving and excelling at CCS. I have never had any problems with the teachers, adhering to school policies, and the administration. As a single working mother of three, it saddens me to see that CCS has decided to finalize its decision with using one source for uniforms. While I completely understand what administration is trying to accomplish, the uniforms are far too expensive. Other parents have said that if their child was attending a public school, they would mostly likely spend the same amount of money. I beg to differ! In this day and age...with the country's economy declining, I find myself and many others being wiser and more frugal in all aspects of spending. There must be a better way! We should not have to sacrifice a good education due to expense. How sad

I have a daughter that attends Challenge and have to say that it is on of the best schools I have ever been involved with. The education that goes on in the classroom is second to none. My daughter is excited each time she gets to do a project for school. Challenge is more than an educational institution though. There are many things that the school has done for so many families that go unnoticed. My sister has a daughter who is at Challenge as well and has been sick recently. The school made sure to ask how she was doing and cared enough to find out how they could help out. Challenge is and incredible educational institution and has a staff and administration that cares about the students and their families. Thank you so much for all that you do for our families. It really does make a difference.

I just wanted to say that my son had speech difficulty last year and this week he spoke a few lines at an assembly. I was amazed on how far he has come along. I credit his teachers for taking the time to recognize his problems and help him overcome them. Thankyou so much!!!

My children have been going to CCS for many years now, and we could not be happier!! The Miller's take a personal interest in every student that attents their school. And there have been times when money has been tight and the Miller's have given my children free uniforms and school supplies, without even blinking and eye!!! Not to mention the top notch education they are getting. My children are reading and writting at a much more advance level than their friends that attent other public, private, and charters schools. CCS could change the uniform policy every year and my children will always return because of the Miller's and the great education!! To everybody that does not like the new policy remember it is YOUR choice where your children go to school!!!! If you don't like it, go to a different school! I am sick of my children hearing you complain!

Excellent School. Great teachers and curriculum. I see a bright future for my daughter as she is getting a strong start in life. She loves it here.

This is my grandson's 2nd year at CCS. His parents and I are extremely happy with the teachers and the curriculum. My grandson enjoys school very much and is learning beyond our expectations. This truly is an excelling school in every way.

My daughter loves CCS and so do I!!! I have found the teachers to be caring and capable (but not coddling) and the new principal to be responsive and approachable. It is quite easy to go on a website and anonymously vent your frustrations - you can say whatever you want with no consequences! If you are unhappy with the teachers, leadership, and/or policy at CCS, you should withdraw your child and find another school that better suits them -there are A lot of children on the waiting list that would be thrilled to get the chance to attend CCS!

I am amazed at some of the recent reviews from parents. My daughter is in 6th grade and has been at CCS all her school life. My son is in 7th grade and spent K-6 at CCS. CCS provides positive reinforcement to children. Parents that want their children praised just for trying are raising wimps. In life, it is expected of you to try. You don't get rewarded for trying. If you are at a job, if you do not produce, you are gone. Failure is part of life, and children need to learn early this fact. The nurturing is provided at home. It is not the teacher's job to be the care taker/nurturing parent. The teacher is there to teach and start showing kids what they are going to be facing in real life. CCS teachers as a whole, do great!

Dear Parents: Thank you for taking a few minutes of your time to learn more about &/or share some of your experiences at Challenge Charter School. CCS was founded in 1996 by Superintendent, Greg Miller & Executive Director, Pam Miller, my parents. The Millers are still active in the leadership of CCS; and I am honored that they have chosen and support me in my new role as Principal. I am proud to have been working with CCS s outstanding team of educators since 1999. The team at CCS is passionate about putting kids first, offering an optimal educational environment, grounded in the fundamental skills of a hands-on, science-oriented, academic core curriculum. As Arizona s First Official Core Knowledge School our curriculum is integrated and sequential providing a challenging and differentiated learning environment also rich in history, character education, and technology. Recently, a few parents have commented on our testing culture. In response, I confirm that our students, of all backgrounds, consistently score 25 to 40% higher than the state average of both: all schools (~1700); and all charter schools (~485). This accomplishment is something our teachers, school community, parents, and especially students are proud of! So, yes, we do talk about it on campus; we empower and encourage our students to celebrate their achievements. Challenge is proud to offer many unique programs and services. Some of the opportunities at Challenge include: Extended-day Kindergarten, before & after school care, extracurricular classes during the school day (such as art, foreign language, PE, technology), Breakfast/lunch program, caring and highly qualified staff, parent/family nights, and a uniform policy. I encourage all interested parents to join us for one of our several Founders Tour & Informational Sessions this spring. At these tours, we discuss school policies & programs in detail and no question goes unanswered. Lots of information including tour dates is available on our webpage at www.challengecharterschool.net. Call our office today at 602-938-5411to sign up! Principal Wendy Miller

I love this school! It has done wonders for my child and her development.

I have to agree with those parents who are NOT thrilled with the new uniforms for the upcoming school year. I beg for the staff at CCS reconsider. How about a compromise...we'll buy the shirts you want, and the pants where we can find them cheaper. You have to remember we buy shorts for the begining of the year, pants a few months later and shorts again come March (because our kids have outgrown the ones from the before). I was unable to attend the SAC meeting last week to know what was said about this proposal but I don't see a problem with it. If the school can meet the parents half way I think there will be many less complaints. And to those parents who are giving a bad rating for the school overall based on the uniform change, shame on you! CCS is a great school!!

I consider it a privilege to have my daughter attend this school. The academics are top notch and the teachers/administration involved and caring. There is emphasis on citizenship and community involvement that I have not seen in other programs. I highly recommend this school. - Shawn Patterson

This is a wonderful school!! This is coming from a mom who has homeschooled for the past 5 years. This year I decided to have my two boys--(10 and 5) to go to 'regular' school. I was exhausted and my oldest refused to learn from me, he refused to read, write, and pay attention...and I'm not a dictator kind of mom :) What this school has given my family is the joy in learning new things, fulfilment, a safe environment, and a great way to meet other like-minded parents. My oldest, in the past 4 months has gotten a compassion award, and is reading way beyond what he was doing at home. They treat each child as unique and address each specific issue. Never once have I gotten the vibe that it all for 'test scores' but rather for my child!! Who could ask for a better place!?!

I agree with the parent who posted that this is bad timing to implement the new uniform policy. We are all struggling to make ends meet. This is not the time to ask us to spend more money on uniforms. Wait until the end of the recession or at least modify the policy, so that we will still be able to buy uniforms at a lower cost. It is my hope that they reconsider due to the financial impact it will have on so many.

I want my daughters to attend a school that has strong leadership, teachers, and high standards both for learning and making sure the students are taught values. This school has it all. I don't understand how parents that want this as well, are having such a problem with a new uniform policy. If you were to dress your child for a year in public school this would cost far more, not to mention, the added stress on the parent and the child, when it came to shopping for clothes that each could agree on. So things have changed, so what. It's not worth my childs education. I feel that our Principal and Vice-Principal are doing an outstanding job. I wish others could be less emotional about this change and stand behind the school. Options: 1. Stop whining 2. Leave-nobody enjoys a whiner.

We are thrilled with this school. This is a school of choice; you can and should choose another if you are not thrilled. Teaching how to test is part of all schools in America these days; so do not kid yourself. However, the teaching here is so much more. What about the discipline program that is consistant, and based on core virtues that are studied? How awsome! The core knowledge curriculum is outstanding; my childs knowledge of history, science, reading & math theory just in 1st grade is so far ahead of his peers. You can provide toys at home. And YOU should be teaching at home, supporting homework, and practicing the values. Elementary school prepares for a future where your child can choose what they learn, now they need the basics so they can make good choices later on!

If you only care about test scores then this is the school for you. Your child may not know how to read or write but will coached over and over for the AIMS and TerraNova tests so the school receives high ratings. Sad.

There is no doubt that the small size of the school, it's location, and enclosed campus, helped me feel comfortable initially sending my child to Challenge. I have to admit over the last two years, I have been disappointed. My child has 3 to 5 major tests every Friday. Teachers continually give practice AIMS tests. There is so much emphasis on tests that my daughter actually became ill during the TerraNova last year, because she said 'If I don't do well, I'm letting my school down.' I really think there is way too much emphasis on tests. And not enough emphasis in the 'joy' of learning.

My daughter started CCS in Kindergarten last year, and its a shame her first elementary experience was not what we thought it would be. Unlike other kids enjoying school, mine did not. She was stressed out. I volunteered in her class and saw how insecure she was. Having a mild speech problem as well does not help. Working with the speech path/ special ed dept. helped some. Low self confidence was a big issue, and i did not see this addressed in her class. She went to summer school and worked with a small handful of very encouraging and patient instructors! She enjoyed this experience. First grade has exceeded our expectations. Yes, she still has some issues, but thanks to the patience and encouragement of her new teacher, she now enjoys going to school! She is no longer stressed with school work, she actually thinks its fun!

Both my daughters were in this school, one has now graduated and the other will start 6th (final) grade in August and considering it a lucky day we found the school - I wish they had joined the school earlier and could stay longer The Principal (Mr Miller), Vice Principal (Ms Wendy Miller) and Teaching staff are passionate about their work and all of the children. Its a wonderful environment. This is a great place to learn and to be a kid!

My Daughter has been attending CCS since kindergarten and is now in 3rd grade this year. She has had excellent teachers all 4 years, and continues to still have relationships with them all.The teachers are great! My Daughter expresses that she has had a wonderful time at this school. The level of education is exceptional and my daughter has always had straight A's to prove it. This year she is in Advanced scholars for her reading and writing. I am also very pleased with the staff's concearn for saftey and the 'no bully' policy! We love CCS!To top it all off this year CCS won the Blue Ribbon Award! Hats off to everone at CCS!

CCS is a very good school. My son looks forward to go to the school every single day. He loves his teachers, his friends, his principal. We are very pleased with this school. He is learning so much. I am very happy with the school timings.

I am so glad I found Challenge Charter. My son has had the best experience and education that I could ever hope for. My son has learned so much and has had so much fun. His teacher, Ms. Owens, has created her classroom into a learning zone that is warm and friendly. The Kindergarten students know that this is a place to learn, but that learning is fun and rewarding. I can't thank the Kindergarten teachers enough for making my son's 1st year of school such a happy and educational experience.

I am an old student of Challenge Charter, and I really have to say that CCS gave me the best education I could ever get. Their education took me to the Regional Spelling Bee. I recently went and passed 7th grade thinking, 'Hey, I already knew ALL of the stuff I had learned at my last year at CCS. I am really thankful for my education here, as I know it will give me so much headway in life. I am going into 8th grade right now, and I'm still stuck thinking... 'Will I know all of the things in this grade too???' Well... anyways, I rate this school a 10/10 because of the treatment, the education, and the pure and simple fun I had at CCS. I recommend it to everyone.

My daughter has been attending challenge since 1st grade and this year will be in 4th. She gets a great education from a staff dedicated to just that. The structure in the academics and citizenship is second to none. I admire the dedication the miller family has for the process of core knowledge and look forward to another great year

My son went to Challenge last year and we are absolutely happy with all the help and excellent teaching enviroment. They also took the class to six field trips and the 'hands on' learning really shows on an everyday basis. We are sending two of our kids this year!

Dear Parents: Each and every time I come to Great Schools, I am humbled by the gracious statements and understanding our Parents have of their child s educational opportunities provided here at Challenge Charter School. I noticed that I had not updated the Comments from the Principal for this web page since October 2004, and a lot of things have happened here at Challenge Charter School since then: Challenge Charter School has been an Excelling School as defined by ADE s AZ LEARNS accountability system for three years. Our students have continued to improve their academic performance every year. Our students score 25 to 40% higher than the state average of both: all schools (1700); and all charter schools (485). Challenge Charter School was recently selected by the Center for Education Reform, a Washington D.C. advocacy foundation for parental choice in the education, as National Charter School of the Year . Over 4000 schools were eligible, 1200 were considered, and 53 were selected. This achievement was recognized and highlighted at a reception by Federal Secretary of Education Margret Spellings in Washington D.C and at a recent State Board of Education meeting in Phoenix. The school s achievements were recognized in June of 2006, by my selection to the very first group of the Circle of Honor Principals in Arizona, This honor was given to 17 principals in AZ, representing the top 1% performing schools in the State (both public district & charter schools). These principals were selected by the AZ Business & Education Coalition; the Wallace Foundation, and the AZ State Department of Education. (ADE) 40 of our teachers have been selected by and made teaching presentations at the annual conferences since 2000 of the Core Knowledge Foundation. Ten at the most recent 2007 Conference in Washington D.C. One of our Kindergarten teachers received a Silver Apple Award. Several of our teachers have been asked by ADE and have served on the State Standards Committee s for both Social Studies and Science. Although all of the above is wonderful and a great profile of the school accomplishments, Challenge, our teachers, the entire school, has not lost its focus of academic achievement; outstanding citizenship; and creating a learning environment that keeps kids looking for more questions to be answered by their outstanding commitment to their own intellectual fulfillment. Please visit our web page at www.challengecharterschool.net for lots of information and a virtual tour of the school.

My daughter has a fantastic kindergarten year at CCS! She enjoys learning & being challenged academically. The teachers are wonderful!! They are experienced, caring and committed to help students do their best. The Pirate reading group is great for the advanced students who are given extra challenging reading & writing materials to work on. My daughter has improved greatly in her reading & writing skills. She is already reading higher level books with little or even no assistance from us. Her Math has improved tremendously too. The core knowledge offered by CCS is a very challenging and exciting curriculum. Besides English, Math & Science, the students at CCS are also taught History/Geography, Visual Arts, Music, Spanish, Computer & P.E. too. WOW!! Many thanks to the Millers & the teaching staff for their time and dedication to our children s education! We love CCS!!

I love CCS! My daughter goes to Kindergarten and has excelled beyond my expectations. The teaching staff continues to make sure that she is 'challenged' so she won't get bored with her studies. She absolutely loves 'Specials Day' and enjoys learning about Spanish, Art, Computers and PE. Her reading skills at her age are awesome! Even my youngest daughter has taken an interest in reading now and looks forward in the Fall to being a 'Pirate'! I also love the fact that the older students (5th/6th graders) get involved with mentoring the younger grades. Many thanks to the teachers, staff and the principal for being understanding and available to the parents when we need to vent our issues!

This school has good test scores and a lot of good thing that can be said about, but the school work is not grade level. They worry more about keeping their big name than helping with learning problem kids.

Challenge is an amazing school. My son is finishing his Kindergarten year and has excelled beyond our expectations. The teachers teach to every student not just one group, they give extra work to the advanced students while taking the time to work with the ones a little bit behind. Challenge gives the kids a rounded education. Every subject is important and the kids are learning music, spanish, art and even charater traits. I can not say enough good things about Challenge. This school teaches kids with an iron fist and a hug something that is missing in many of today's public schools. If you truly want the best education for your student this school is the best hands down.

This school has been great! I have two very different children and yet the curriculum and teachers have allowed each of them to shine in their own ways. I look forward to seeing the great things that my third will do.

My child has attended Challenge since Kidnergarten, he is now in the fifth grade. I really love this school. The principal makes himself available to the parents and is very understanding. The entire school loves kids and it shows. Acidemically my son has had some struggles but this is not a reflextion of the teachers or acedemics offered at Challenge. My son has ADD and the teachers have always been willing to work with myself and my son to highten his success. This is an excelling school and is a challenging school. If acedemics are important to you this is where you will want to send your child. I do wish there were more extra-curricular activities.

I have agonized over my children's school placement, and after one academic year, I am convinced that I have made the best possible choice. One of my sons attended kindergarten in a Blue Ribbon, excelling AZ State public elementary school. At the end of the school-year, they had finished learning the ABCs and learned to count to 100. That was it. My younger son is now finishing kindergarten at Challenge Charter School. He is reading small books and does single digit addition and subtraction. My first grader has just finished reading Charlotte's Web. He is learning about magnetism, the world's oceans and landmasses and climates. The basic reading/writing/math instructions at this school are obviously superior. The science and Spanish are absolutely unparalleled! With the foundation Challenge is laying, my children will no doubt succeed in our world of growing expectations. Thank you to the Staff and the Millers!

Challenge Charter School is an excellent school and deserves its 'Excelling' rating. My daughter attended kindergarten there this year. By the middle of the year she was reading at a first grade level. She loves going to school everyday and is learning not only language arts and math but science and social studies as well.

I am a teacher at Challenge Charter School and have been for three years. This school, like any other business, has undergone staff changes over those years, and the new staff just keeps getting better and better. I enjoy teaching here and don't have any plans to leave. The families are dedicated and loyal and so is the staff. Our curriculum is challenging and the teachers expect a lot from the students. If you are looking for a school that will challenge your kids and welcome your involvement, it's Challenge Charter.

The academic programs are solid. There are no sports and limited extracurricular activites.

This is a wonderful Charter school in Arizona. Charter school often get a bad reputation, but this one is wonderful. Principals and teachers genuinely care about students and the inportance of their education. This is is an official Core Knowledge School...which is a terrific advanced ciriculum!

I have to admit I thought this school would be good for my child but the teachers lack of compassion and understanding is outrageous. I can't believe that a teacher would rather fail a child then help them where they are lacking. The office staff leaves something to be desired they were the rudest people I have ever talked to not to mention the lack of commincation in that office. Oh and if you are a divorced spouse trying to be involved in your childs learning forget that they are absolutly no help. So no I would recommend this school unless you want your child to have no manners, behavriol problems, and learning issues......

The academics at Challenge are incredible, but the music and foreign language programs don't exist for the higher grades at all, and now they have no art, either. We are very disappointed that our children have no art, music, or foreign language education at Challenge.

My 2 Children and both of my Nephews attended for a total of 4 years. My soon to be 4th grader has been behind in math since 1st grade. We were unable to afford a tutor and unfortunately Challenge did not offer any help with his academics. He is now going to start at a new school that will not just pass him through to the next grade causing him to be farther behind his fellow classmates.I was not pleased with the leadership of the principal.

This school follows the Core Knowledge curriculum, providing a well-rounded education. They also handled my 7 year old son, who is high in ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder, with calm and consistent discipline. Unlike many schools, it provided bus transportation, provided the parent could get the child to the bus stop. Overall, a positive experience.

Awesome curriculum! My son got a better education at Challenge than anywhere we could have sent him. Accolades to the faculty and staff!!

Challenge Charter School uses an excellent curriculumn called Core Knowledge, where the children get more of a wholistic education (including geograph and history). It is also very well managed and professionally run. It is managed better than a number of for profit companies I know. The Millers ( who managed the school) have high ethical standards and really care about the well being of the children. The school teachers and staff are very responsive to the needs the children and the parents. On many occasions, I have written notes asking for clarity on a matter or an additional receipt and they readily respond. Not only are the academics great, but they also really embrace and kid for the children. Everyone (including the janitorial and the Before/After Care staff)at the school really cares about the well being of each and every child. That makes a big difference in a child's response to learning!

There are positive and negative qualities about this school. Positive: The VETERAN teachers at Challenge Charter School are outstanding. Negative: The teachers do not seem to be supported by their administration. Negative: There seems to be a high turnover rate among teachers. Positive: The Core Knowledge curriculum is fantastic for kids. Positive: The kids at the school are wonderful.

Kids learn a lot at this school. Good curriculum. Unfortunately there is a high teacher turnover - not sure why...?

great school. academics is great.

Our daughter was enrolled in Challenge for Kindergarten and half of first grade. This is an EXCELLENT school and we very reluctantly transferred her (we moved further west and the commute was too long). Our daughter loved going to school at Challenge; she is pretty bright and her teachers were always supportive of her, encouraging her reading and math skills, and giving her extra homework if she wanted. If we ever had a concern or question the teachers and administration were accessible and willing to work with us. We were happy with the level of security at the school, and the kids seemed pretty well disciplined. We also liked the school's uniform and environmental policy (non-toxics used in cleaning and building materials, no perfume/cologne on campus). They offered plenty of extra-curricular activities. Parents were fairly involved, probably more so than the average school.

My daughter is excited about learning now and tells me about the cultures, literature, and science she is discovering, whereas her attitude before was basically, 'If they aren't letting me color and draw, then it's too hard.' She moves at her own pace and gets extra 'fun' (more difficult) activities in areas where she excels, and for every hole in her expensive private-school kindergarten education her teacher was more than willing to spend extra time with me and with her to get her caught up. Her entire attitude has completely reversed in terms of her willingness to work hard and meet the challenges she's given; instead of doing the bare minimum expected of her every day, she gets her required work done and begs for more. We are thrilled with the school and their willingness to go the extra mile for the kids, and feel lucky to have our children there.

Our daughter is enrolled in Kindergarten at Challenge Charter School. We did guite a bit of research on greatschools.net as well as talking to other parents of elementary school children before choosing Challenge Charter. Our daughter had gone to a full-day Montessori School for two years before kindergarten and was reading and doing math problems. So naturally we wanted a school that would challenge our daughter and we have not been disappointed. She gets one-on-one time with her teacher or a teacher aide to practice her reading and takes first grade math tests. We have recommended Challenge Charter to other parents and continue to do so. The Principal (Mr. Miller) really cares about the kids and it shows.

As a parent who is pursuing their Masters in Education I was very disappointed by this school despite their high scores. My child had five different teachers in one year. When my child entered the school her scores on the stanford nines were off the chart, she is now spending her next year at a new school getting back up to speed. Adjusting to so many different teachers in one year really put her at a disadvantage. My child is now attending a gifted program at her current school and thriving in reading, once again her love for learning has returned, she lost that love at Challenge Cahrter school. Pulling my child out of this school was the best decision I made regarding her education and future.

If you are looking for a school where all teachers are valued and have longetivity, this is not the school for you.

We are in our 5th year at CCS and have been extremely pleased. The education is well-rounded and the students are always encouraged to participate in any area beyond the 'normal' studies. Our oldest has gone from being shy and unsure of herself, to having the confidence to help younger students, create presentations for assemblies and give daily announcements. We truly feel the children come first and will leave the school with the necessary tools to continue higher education.

I have had both my kids enrolled at Challenge for five years now. I am distressed because I now have to look for a 7th grade. Of the 5 (Ms Cambra had my daughter twice and my son once. Ms. Steggie had my daughter and son)eduacators that have enriched these kids, I was only displeased with one. I am happy with the parent envolvment. I am thrilled with the monthly family nights. I feel that the school is focused scholastically and wants the kids to succeed. I like the Core Knowledge Curriculum, and really enjoy the science fairs and the opportunites to learn and grow.

I have been a student at Challenge for 5 years. I really like the teachers. They are kind, and they help out their students as much as possible. But, I do not like the schools clothing policies. I think they are too strict. My mom adores them. The socks can not be ackle socks. They have to be a certain height, and I believe that it is very rediculus. I have learned a ton at this school. I wish that they had more afordable extra curicular activities though.

The curriculum is wonderful! My son has been at Challenge Charter School since kindergarten. He's been tested gifted by the state of AZ. Although the school does not have a gifted program per se, he has been kept challenged throughout his school career there.

I think the school is great! I'm a student at Challenge and have learned a lot since kindergarten. I wish it went up to 7th and 8th grade like before.

When we moved to the area 5 yrs. ago I was concerned with finding a school that provided quality education. After weeks of searching, we decided to try Challenge Charter. I am happy to say this has been one of the best decisions we've made. The quality of education is excellent. The environment is great. The teachers are caring and are always willing to go that extra mile to help your child succeed. Parent involvement is encouraged and the safety and discipline of the children is a priority. Children are recognized monthly for their efforts in a school assembly. The principal and his staff are great, they truely understand what it takes to help children reach success. Their leadership and dedication is obvious and that is what makes Challenge Charter School such a great school.

As with any school, there are good and bad points. Students who tend to learn fast and easy will do really well. Students who may need a little more attention or help, will not do well. Special Education programs need to be revamped as they are not following state mandated rules. The curriculum is above average and the hands on approach really engages students to learn more. Some teachers know the priority is on teaching and communication with parents, some are more worried about socks, hair color, and food brought on campus. Discipline is enforced, this is wonderful! Need extracurricular activities everyone can attend as not everyone can afford what little they do offer.

Challenge has been the most positive experience of my childrens education to date. I have 3 children who have gone to challenge one of my kids was very behind when she started challenge and caught up 3 yrs. worth of learning in 1 year. She never felt stressed out either, always positive.

I am a parent who is also a teacher at Challenge. I just wanted to respond to the post that Mr. Miller made some decisions that may have been sound 'business' decisions but not sound 'educational' decisions. Yes, at times there is turn over. We all know how hard it is for children to have changes in staff. However, I can assure you that these changes are always made with the children's best interest as the highest and primary priority. As someone who can see things from both sides (a parent and a staff member) I can honestly say I have never know two people(Mr. and Mrs. Miller) who care more about the children at their school. They have always (in the 6 years I've known them) put the kids first in every decision they make. I am proud to send my child there and to work with such great people.

Challenge Charter School is by far the best elementary school in Arizona! The teachers are outstanding and Mr. & Mrs. Miller (co-founders) are amazing with the students and running the school. My child is learning things I didn't know until high school. I recommend this school to any parent who is interested in providing their child with the best education Arizona can offer. You won't regret it.

Good school great principal and staff!

Challenge Charter is fantastic. My daughter is learning a ton in kindergarten. I am looking forward to sending here there to 1st grade and sending my other children to Challendge when they are of age. The only thing I wish they had more of was Sports Activites, ect. They have after school dance, gymnastics, chess and drama.

My daughter has attended this school for the past 5 years and we have never had a problem. This year, unfortunately, our experience has been the complete opposite. The 4th grade teaching staff is not of the highest caliber and the kids are paying the price. They have tremendous problems with bullies and neither the teachers nor Mr. Miller seem to want to take it seriously. I would recommend the Kindergarten thru 3rd grade program but am not so sure about 4th grade and above.

I am a parent who was a teacher at Challenge Charter School for a quarter of this school year. I suggest that parents ask more questions about how technology is used in the classrooms of this school. I was not able to use computers with my students; there was no access to the internet in the classrooms or working computers in the pod. Another area of concern is the constant and high rate of staff turn-over. I am an experienced teacher and mother of three, and I would not recommend this school.

What a great school. My son has been attending for the last 2 years, starting with Kindergarten last year and 1st grade this year. I am very pleased with how well he has excelled in all areas of study. The staff and teachers are great. The communication between the teachers and I are very informative and also give you peace of mind. The population is smaller than a public school which I believe is a factor in their success. Nobody is forgotten about. I have had nothing but good experiences with this school and will continue to enroll my son through 6th grade!

The staff/teacher turnover has been dificult on our children. Just this week they changed the before/after care leader that is well liked by everyone. The CEO (not Principal) has made several good business decisions that were poor education decisions. We have been there for over two years and this will be our last.

I particularly like the low tolerance level for poor behavior at this school. The principal takes proactive measures that make the children want to behave. For instance; they receive an award if they're caught being good. I have also witnessed his hand's on approach when a child casually said to another child 'I'm going to kill you'. The child was obviously just expressing himself inappropriatly, but I was happy to see that the threat (as innocent as it was) wasn't ignored. I expressed concerns with Mr. Miller and he was nothing short of professional. Mr. and Mrs. Miller are both professionals and are doing a terrific job. They're dedication to their students is outstanding!

After 3 frustrating years in a public school, I transferred my son to CCS. I can't say how much it has been a pleasure! My son has never been a better student, he loves school! His teachers are incredible, the curriculum is the best I've seen, and my only wish is that CCS would evolve into a set of schools encompassing grades K-12. Making the decision to choose Challenge Charter School was one of the best I've ever made.

The school needs to be understanding more when a parent has a concern.

My child is getting the education at this school that she deserves. She went to a DOD school and a public school before arriving at Challenge Charter and she didn't want to learn and hated school. Now she is doing great and enjoys learning now. I would recommend this school to anyone. Now my son also goes to Challenge Charter and loves it also.

extracurricular are needed to balance the education the children receive at the school. I am so please with the knowledge my children have obtain.

I am the aunt of 2 former students at Challenge. They began attending Challenge after a couple of difficult life situations. This school, and the teachers, helped get them back on track and happy. They loved their teachers, their fellow students, and Mr and Mrs Miller. The teachers were awesome and worked with each student at their level. If someone was in the lower level, the goal of the teachers was to get them up with everyone else and they usually succeeded. I would recommend Challenge to any parent.

My children have been going to Challenge Charter for the last 3 years and they are so advanced in all subjects that it worries me that when I have to change my oldest next year to Junior High that he won't be challenged academically. I recommend this school to everyone that is looking for a wonderful primary education school. Infact my Kindergartener has benefited so much from the full day program that they offer, she is not a napper so it was difficult for her at daycare and now she is challenged all day long and she enjoys it very much. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Miller for the wonderful educational program you have incorporated and offer to many young children.

This is easy I give it a 5 out of 1 to 5. This is the fifth year that my grandchildren have attended Challenge Charter school. At first My youngest daughter started her two daughters there, I have three other grandchildren living with me. My daughter was ill and I need to be there to help her so I put the two oldest kids in Challenge also. It was the best thing I could have done. My family had 4 Girls inrolled, then two years ago My son and his family moved here and placed there two boys in school. The boys were having a hard time in school prior to coming here. They have excelled since then and have earned a number of awards. THis school year my sons 5 year old daughter started Kindergarden. To date our family has 6 out of my 10 grandchildren attending Challenge Charter school. One granddaghter just got to old for Challenge Charter school and is in high school now. Plans at this time are that the last 3 will attend Kindergarden there next fall. There goals are children centered. The parent involvment is wonderful. Parent sugstions are openly and wonderfully welcomed. I just cant say enough about this school. They started in a church and now they are in a very modern school. I am very excited about Challenge charter school and recomend it highly. My grandchildren love this school and so do I. I have recomended this school to several friends and they love it also. The safety at school is great. You cant get onto the grounds without going through the office during school hours. My granddaughters no longer have to fear peer presure on the play grounds as recess is well supervised. The schools monthly family activities are always well planned and usually well attended and very versitile. They treat the children with respect and in return get respect. The children are also taught respect and patriotism for our country. Try it you will love it. We do!

I wish to add to my privious comments that I really like the Principal. When my daughter died of cancer He nd Mrs Miller were more than supportive and sensitive. I was very touched when they attended her funeral. He works very hard to make this school a cut above the rest. I am very pleased that all of my grandchildren to this point have had the opertunity to attend Challenge. One of the many things I love is that they have a strict uniform code. The children act different when they are in uniforms. It is also one way of teaching them to follow rules. This is an A + school.

This is our first year at Challenge and so far we are pleased with the variety of subjects the kids are learning. I would like to see more review material brought home so I can better help my kids understand the work at home if needed since they dont bring home text books.

It's all about the children! This is our second year attending Challenge Charter, and we're so happy with it! Our 3rd and 4th grade daughters are so eager to tell us about their day and have taught me things I never knew! We especially like the variety of topics that are covered due to the Core Knowledge cuurriculum that is followed. The teachers work as a team and everyone is always on the same page. Communication from the classroom is great. Weekly newsletters are sent home so that we always know what is being taught. Mr. & Mrs Miller are very involved in the school and lead the way in keeping the children motivated and excited to learn.

We checked out many schools before a friend recemended challenge charter - this is our second year and our 2nd grade daugher loves to go to school. Many thanks to Mr Miller the principal.
