Cocopah Middle School Reviews

Wow, this school is horrible. The academics are far below average and there is persistent bullying. People only care about wealth and popularity. DO NOT go to this school.

It was the best when I went there twenty years ago and it's still the best. When we relocated back to AZ a year ago, I made sure we would be in the Cocopah district. I wasn't leaving my daughter's education to chance by going anywhere else.

Horrible Horrible HORRIBLE. This school is the worst school ever, not only is there constant bullying but it was unsafe and the staff did nothing to help at all. Don't send your students to this school unless you want them to come home crying everyday.

I don't see why so many parents say this school had a bullying problem. I went to a school in the paradise valley district that was much worse than Cocopah. The principal never did anything to help you at all, unlike Rasmussen who handles every situation, and at that school everyone was a bully. Do not listen to the parents stating this school has a bullying problem. Also they do not just teach you stuff to get you ready for AIMS unlike my previous school. They actually teach you things. This school does not have a bullying problem. If you want bullying problems head down to paradise valley district. I was bullied since kindergarten at my old school. Now I am friends with everybody. This school is amazing. If you are looking to pull a child out of a school at middle school age come here.

I moved from the bay area of California and so far this school is awesome because the teachers are very nice and I don't see why so many people are saying that people get bullied because comparing to my other school in the supposedly 'wealthy' part of California there is no bullying at all. Also there are very nice counselers and overall this school is awesome.

Safety is an issue at this school. I too, have a very bright child who has common sense. To say that having a bright child with common sense makes them immune to bullying is absurd. It is a reality and does happen to children regardless of their intelligence at this school. The staff needs to be involved with this issue. Having only good test scores doesn't make a school great.

I have had my experiences with this school that were amazing. The academics are great, my kids have mad friends easily, and school has high test scores. The only thing I think is an issue is the parent and staff are not involved enough. Also my kids, who are very bright and know common sense have not seen or have had bullying. I would highly recommend Cocopah!

The safety at this school was a serious concern for me. Constant bullying and harassment. Do not attend here unless you are very socially adroit or physically tough.

Cocopah is so fortunate to have Frank Rasmussen as their principal for another year! He is the BEST thing that has happened to that school for a long time!

I LOVE Cocopah! It's AMAZING! The teachers are great and all of the staff members are superior! This was my first year at a public school and I made friends like that! The kids are the best and I can't ask for a better middle school!

If anyone is out there looking for an excellent middle school - choose Cocopah. The new principal, Frank Rasmussen is very professional, respectful, and a wonderful addition this year. He is doing a fabulous job with the students and staff. The elective classes (especially Tech Lab) are great. The academics are excelling.

The academics are really quite good. No, it's not California or some of the schools back east, but it's pretty good for a public school here in Arizona. The problem is that the bullying and harrassment among the kids is totally out of control. The administration is incompetent in terms of managing it. Parents are afraid to come forward and address it in an effective manner. Thus it persists. We are looking for a way out, not because it's not a good school, but because we don't feel it's a safe environment for our kids.

The older negative comments regarding the severely lacking leadership, academics geared towards average, good test scores due to the neighborhood, bullying, etc. are totally correct. I used to be an involved parent before the present leadership came into being. Demeaning, insulting and disrespectful of parents and students. Cannot understand how/why she is still in place. The bright spots- Mr. Bacon and Ms. Chemodurow. Middle school seems to be hard enough, but Cocopah makes it worse. Looking back, I would not send my kids to this school. Glad to be out of it.

Front office is inadequately staffed. They seldom know what's going on. We will be leaving at the end of this year. Enough is enough.

I have two children, one 6th grader and one 7th grader. We came from San Francisco two years ago and have had difficulty finding a challenging school environment. The first year here we had the kids in a private school that proved to be behind academically, and also had limited friend choices, as the classes were 10 - 12 students each. This year we moved the kids to Cocopah with mixed results. My 7th grader has a math class (pre-algebra) that he enjoys, but the English and Science classes are far behind their California counterparts. My 6th grader finds the academics unchallenging (it is mostly a review of material covered in previous years), but has several good friends which makes school enjoyable for her. We are still searching for a combination of challenging academics and a fulfilling peer group experience.

I currently attend this school and I think that it is an exceptional school. I simply adore all my teachers. Thank you!

I would like to thank all of my teachers for teaching each of their respective subjects. I would especially like to thank Mrs. Bunker for 2 great years of interaction. She has been an amazing teacher.

I would like to thank Mrs. Bunker for being such a wonderful and understanding teacher. She always listens to my problems and helps me out in tough situations. I am so thankful that I was able to be in her class and I wish I could stay in it forever.

Mr. Mueller is a very respectful teacher that always goes over questions even if it has been asked just before. He is very understanding of all students.

This is our first year at Cocopah Middle School in the seventh grade. So far, our daughter loves this school. She believes the children are well behaved. We were looking for academics along with a good discipline program. We believe good academics comes with good behavior. It is so difficult to find higher grade levels with both. I hope the teachers and staff keep up the wonderful work.

my son just loves going to cocopah. He says the sixth grade teachers are the best teachers in the SUSD.I would recommend that any 6th 7th or 8th graders go there.I know that my son will!

I went to Cocopah for 3 years. I think it was the best school I have ever been to. They always tried to help my if I had a problem. The concoler was always there for me. Cocopah was and is a fantistisc school.

Our son and daughter attended Cocopah. While the standardized test scores are above average, we are still very disappointed. The area is clearly high in income and parental support, but the lead comes from the principal. Very political and politically correct, favorites, and policies that make little sense. (They have lockers for instance, but the kids are not allowed to use them, so they carry all their books from room to room). If this school was in an 'average' neighborhood I expect the scores would be much lower. Just our input and feelings.

School environment is very friendly. Academics are good. Teachers go over the material but in general do not respond to parent's questions. Little help in transitioning to high school.

This school has scored very highly on a variety of tests, but not because of their gifted program. This school has formed their curriculum around the average student, leaving some behind and others extremely bored.

My son attended Cocopah for the past three years and loved every moment. The band program is excellent, as is PACT, and Tech Lab. He has been challenged and I am thrilled to say that he is prepared for Chaparral HS. The administration is pleasant and responsive, the teachers are fabulous, and the counselors are both awesome. Our experience has been wonderful!!!!

Many of the sixth grade teachers are very caring. The program is challenging, although they waste a lot of time on busy work projects which become annoying for the parents.

We do not like this school, as the academics seem mediocre at best. I would agree with an earlier post that the administration is into political correctness. While there is a full time police officer on campus, bullying seems to be omnipresent. The principal is of little value.

We have been unhappy at Cocopah for several years. This is our last year there. There appears to be an air that everything is wonderful. But, there are many problems at this middle school. The principal seems to be more interested in appearance than substance. The physical plant needs help. We have been involved with APT (PTA to some), but that appears to be more of a social club than an action oriented group. Our sons claim it's the worst school they have attended. Just my observations and opinions.

We are new to the area and are taking a wait and see approach. My daughter was inadvertently left out of the computer system and had no class schedule for orientation. The office staff is clearly overwhelmed. Not sure yet about the teaching staff.

While some teachers are very good, this school has been the least positive influence on our three kids of any of the six schools they've been enrolled. Middle school is difficult for most kids, Cocopah even more so. It seems that the administration just tries to make the problems go away instead of addressing them. I've been around middle/high school kids since 1967, I could not work in this school. Overall rating D-minus.

I would not recommend this school. The administration seems disorganized and lacks effective leadership. The staff is marginal at best. The academic program does not challenge the students, but allows them to do the minimum necessary just to get by. This is true even in the 'advanced' classes. The band program is excellent, but otherwise this school has been very disappointing. I will not send my younger children to this school.

Good school, but probably too many students per teacher. Teachers not good about keeping parents informed of students progress.

The school's high test scores are more indicative of the educational level of the school's community. While there are some good teachers, class size is overwhelming. Budget cuts next year will only make this worse. Heavy reliance of worksheets. The principal, who is leaving, was punitive and unresponsive to parents. I have two very bright boys attending the school. Abysmal program for gifted students.

We were getting a big help from a counseler of 6 graders June Solod! Thank you June for your help! You are the best!

Cocopah is a great school -- loving teachers, terrific leadership, and lots of things for our kids to do. I highly recommend it!

My child is doing very well at the school and is happy overall. I do believe and embrace that the academic standards are considerably highter than average and are consistently being met. My child has had no major complaints about any particular teacher.
