Glendale American School Reviews

Things have really changed at this school. The bullying issue has been addressed and son who has a disability really flourished this past year. He was bullied last year but this year the issues was adressed quickly and firmly by his resource teacher. He had a wonderful year academically and made more progress this year than in his past three years.

the school has a big bullying problem. and the school seems to be just getting the hang of how many days/hours are in a school year. I think this should have already been handled.

My child has ADHD issues and neither the teachers or the administration really help. If your child does not fit the mold of 'easy' student this school will greatly disappoint you. I now have to pay out of pocket to get a tutor to re-teach my child what should have been taught at this school. Poor teachers and worse administration.

My son attended this school for 3rd and 4th grade and for the most part the teachers are good at what they do, however, I would have to also say that there are too many kids and not enough eyes. My son is an only child and had his own attention issues, however with so many kids here he had to pick up habits to survive and a lot has to do with lack of parent involvement here; as a result I felt overall that there were too many students to deliver an effective educational curriculum.

I cannot believe how much my son who was in pre-school learned so much in just pre-school! He learned all his colors which I was struggling with him he learned shapes he even learned to write his name alittle! I am very impressed with this school and can't wait to see what he learns in kindergarten!

Glendale American educated my kindergartener this past school year. I have never been so impressed and proud of what my daughter has accomplished in such a short time. I know that [she] has a positive attitude towards school now because of her wonderful teacher, Mrs. Belangie, and the foundation and structure of education in this elementary school. The staff is fantastic! There were loads of activities and events to include the parent in the educational aspect, and also in the fun. They strongly promote parental involvement. As a single mom, finding the time is hard, but all of the events were fun. I can't wait to have my daughter start back in August!

Glendale American has some of the most caring and professional teachers out there. The learning environments they create are safe and enjoyable for children of all ages.

i am not happy with the academics taught there. the school seems more like a daycare for older children than a teaching institute. there are a lot of bullys and not enough done about it.

This year has been stressful and a big waste of time. If you have a child with a disability like ADHD stay away from American. They do not care about their students. If they don't fit the mold, they push you out.

Both of our girls went to Glendale American. We were sad to leave the school when we moved. My oldest struggled with reading and the teachers did a great job helping her through special reading groups and one on one help. My youngest was only here for kindergarten, but was able to spell many words and was reading short stories by the end of the yaer. The teacher's and staff are all great! They work with the parents and care about our input. Parent involvement is great, they are always helping out and doing all sorts of activities and fundraisers. And your kids will enjoy the music and art programs. all in all you and your children will love this school. The Bennett's

This school has some great aspects and some real problems. I found the administration to be involved and helpful, some teachers were fantastic, and the guidance counselor was wonderful. However, my biggest concern was a lack of supervision. There are simply too many children and too few adults. There are also teachers who don't relate well to children outside a very specifc norm. Overall, I think this school doesn't do a very good job meeting the needs of children with challenges that fall outside the average.

The k-3 reading program is WONDERFUL! Students are assessed and taught based on individual needs. The gifted 'cluster' model is a good idea but is ineffective. I thought it was the teachers fault until I volunteered and saw how hard she works to try and meet everyone's needs. It is unrealistic to expect teachers to meet the needs of students that range from complete non-english speaking to verbally gifted within one classroom of 30 students. The class sizes are WAY too big. There is very little 'fluff' teaching. Although there is little science or social studies taught in lower grades. It is a shame that the administration does not allow fieldtrips or small children to have reccess more than once a day. There seems to be little support for teachers with discipline issues. Summer school and after-school programs help low students. Report cards are very difficult to read and understand.

I have had 2 children attend Glendale American. Both had great teachers and experiences. The teachers always found time to answer my questions or return my phone calls. I appreciated the time they spent getting to know my children individually. The only things I find lacking at this school are the after school sports activities available at the middle schools.

My children have attended Glendale American for the past four years. We're looking for a new school! Landmark middle school is no better. There have been a few teachers at this school who have been well organized, communicated well with the students and the parents and clearly challenged the students without simply bombarding them with homework. However, in general there is virtually no communication between the school administration and parents. It often takes multiple phone calls to be able to speak with a teacher or administrator or receive return calls. The music programs are a joke. The general music classes spend more time watching movies than anything else. Band/Orchestra concerts are combined and completely unorganized. If a parent wants to know anything, it must be requested, even the dates of events. I believe this filters from the inadequate communication/organization of the GESD.

Im not to pleased with this school, It's my first experience with public schools since my daughter just began kindergarten. I guess I might have high expectations. The school is old with too many kids, the whole intergrating kinder. with eigth graders scares me. I feel elementary schools should stop at sixth grade. Im looking for another school for next year.

I have only been at this school for one school year and so far so good. The only disappointment I have faced is that no summer school programs are offered for enrichment purposes. There are district programs but are not always available for Glendale American students.

Too many hispanic children come to this school with not enough English speaking ability and their parents not willing to get involved for one reason or another. The curriculum is below par when compared with other districts in the Phoenix Metro Area. This district, let alone this school, needs to start spending the necessary funds to greatly improve our children's future. No wonder Arizona is ranked 49th with schools like this allowed to continue.

Thus far I am new to the system; however, I must say at first hand one would believe Glendale American Elementary to be an awesome school, but behind the scenes there is a great deal of double standards and injustice that is allowed to take place for whatever reason deemed necessary. I would urge anyone and everyone to take a serious second look at the rules and regulations governing Glendale American Elementary and conduct a further research with regard to any complaints regarding double standards, issues of racism and so forth.

Unfortunately my children attended this school. The administration is more concerned with down grading the lessons and deliverance of the assignments for the bottem 3 percent of the student body. This is all part of tweaking their scores to look better on paper! For all those children in the middle or high achievers range, I garentee your children will not be prepared for higher level learning. Afterall, these children are given even less challenging material than what is prescribed for average learners.

I currently have two daughters at this great school. The teachers are well knowledgeable about the subjects they teach. Comparing Glendale American School to other schools in its category convinced me of the school's commitment to quality and student attachment. I belived the staff is doing an excellent job. In fact, I noticed a great improvement in 2000-01 Stanford 9 test results compared to the 2001-02 test result. I hope the quality continues to move up the chart both in Arizona and nationwide.
