Lookout Mountain Elementary School Reviews

As a parent, I am frustrated by the budget cuts we are currently facing. However, I am grateful that my children are able to attend a school that has such dedicated teachers and staff. I have found the administration to be open to comments and concerns and extremely proactive in it's approach to dealing with parent concerns. Both of my children are involved with the gifted program and while I have some frustrations with the program set up, I have learned that it has little to do with the way it is run on our campus. The program guidelines are largely dictated by the district. The teachers are extremely dedicated and the new program director is a breath of fresh air. Any changes will take time to implement, as they have to work things through the district level. I am extremely satisfied with the quality of education my children are receiving.

Unfortunately, the problems at this school existed before the budget crisis and will exist after, due to the current administrations all talk, but no follow through attitude and inability or wiliness to make decisions. The budget should not be used as an excuse to lower the quality of the gifted program, current administration explained that no teachers are being cut from gifted program. Yet, quality continues to decrease at the expense of our children!

Lookout Mountain is a wonderful school filled with dedicated teachers, support staff and administrators. I suspect any hesitancy to implement new programs is a result of the budget crisis the public school system is facing due to the Governor's plan to cut funding and not related to LOM's adminstration directly. As a parent I feel that LOM provides many opportunities for further enrichment for its students. There is also a real effort for parental involvement on every level, the teachers are easily accessible and open to volunteers and the pto has several levels of participation available.

Overall a good school with committed teachers and parents. Administration (principal, etc.) could be much more proactive - lots of talk about looking into new programs, suggested changes, etc. but not a lot of follow-through = lots of talk but no action. Sadly, the gifted program is really lacking to the detriment of students that qualify for it.

A school draws its lifeblood from three distinct categories: parents, teachers and the principal. LME has excellent involved parents, a high number of dedicated teachers, but a very poor principal and assistant principal. In the past there was an atmosphere of cooperation and openness, nowadays teachers are afraid to take a stand or make a point for fear of censure. The 'gifted' program is a joke mainly due to lack of funding. In short, same ol' same ol'. Too bad as the students are some of the best behaved, caring and self motivated kids that you will ever find in a public school system.

I am very impressed with the school in general. The teachers are very organized and i love all the parent involvement. My children recently have transferred to this school and the things they are learning are way ahead of their other school and they are catching up easily. I am impressed with what i have seen so far.

lookout mountain rocks there school is the best

A good school overall. But teachers and administration really focus on low achieving students and to a much lesser extent on higher achieving students. School is about having fun and learning but teachers and programs should reach and motivate ALL students, even those that are high achievers or good students with the potential to excel if properly motivated and presented with innovative and creative teaching methods.

I am very pleased with this school. I think the kidergarden program is great. Children should learn and have fun at the same time. This is what kindergarden is all about. I read some of the less positive comments about this school and I think that some parents push their children too much at the early beginning of their schooling life. Mrs Rogers is the greatest teacher. She is loving and kind and does an amazing job for each individual child.

This is an excelling school. The curriculum is good but not great. Schools can compare amongst the other schools in the District but they should really compare themselves against other States and try to incorporate the best from other schools. Why I am saying this is when you compare a third grade here to a third grade in one of the best schools in Texas or New Jersey, you are going to find that excelling does not mean a thing. Our kids, whatever schools they go to, have to compete against these kids from the best of the best. So, LOM should re-look at their curriculum. Instead of teaching kids to work towards AIMS, Terranova for their grades, teachers should push the kids to do something extra so that all the standardized tests will be a breeze for the kids.

I have 2 boys that have attended this school since Kindergarten. I am extremely impressed with the parental involvement and all the teachers and staff. It truly has been a wonderful experience for my boys!

I have gone to this school since I was in Kindergarten and now I am in 6th grade. This school has always been wonderful to me and the teachers are so nice and caring. I have enjoyed all my years here. They have a lot of extra activities such as PE, Music, Band, Chorus, Basketball teams for the older kids, and tons of programs for after school! I highly recommend it.

Despite 'intervention teams' my son is not conforming after two years (kindegarden and 1st grade). They are unable to motivate my child to learn. They are unable to effectively discipline my child whenever he misbehaves.

For such a highly rated school, their program for gifted students is sorely lacking and doesn't engage and inspire eligible students.

Great school, great community, lots of extracurricular activities, love the area. Highly recommended

Play ground supervision is very poor. Teachers let the kindergartners out of the cafeteria early exposing them to the older students. On a positive note the Principal (Mrs. Johnson) is trying her best to correct the playground issues. Thank you

What a fantastic school! Besides the basic subjects, my children participate in band, chorus, P.E., art, computers, speech events...the list goes on and on. I couldn't be happier with the education and experience we've had at Lookout Mountain. Mrs. Hicks (4th grade) is the icing on the cake! Both of my children look forward to going to school. (My preschooler can't wait to go: she already knows the school song by heart.) Bullying is not tolerated, high standards are set, and I always feel welcomed on the campus. What a great bunch of kids and teachers. Hooray!

My son is in Mrs. Spitalny's kindergarten class at Lookout Mountain. I was a little worried about his going off to school but my fears were gone once I really got to see this school in action. I only have wonderful things to say about this school & his teacher & the other teachers that I have met. There is lots of parental involvement, lots of fun & activities but also lots of learning. My son has grown & learned so much in the past 5 months since school started. I am so grateful to have my son attend this school. The school motto is 'a community of caring' & to me that about says it all! highly recommend this school to anyone!

They put on good show but they just can't keep it up. Great place for testing if your child fits the model.

Wonderful School, staff and kids! Great place!

Academic offereings for 2nd grade and higher seem great. However, kindergarten and 1st grade class content could be improved to make it more interesting and educational for kids and keep them motivated - especially for those that have had preschool experience. Kindergarten activities in particular need to be improved.

I was a student at Lookout previously, and I was very pleased with almost everything about the school. Students are very carefully placed in classes based on personality and any needs that must be met by their teacher, so everyone receives quality education at their own pace, at least in the upper grades. That said, my brother was in kindergarten at Lookout and while his teacher was very nice, the curriculum was not very challenging or motivational for pre-school graduates. However, the older you get at LOM, the more you get out of it. There are lots of good extracurricular activities, especially considering that this is an elementary school. And their current prinicipal really seems to know what he's doing. I think that your child could get a lot out of studying at Lookout Mountain.

I am not very pleased with anything I have experienced

The school has a great bunch of teachers. The administration is a little unfriendly. My kids really didn't like all of the emphasis on the testing and all of the practice they were subjected to.

The teachers and supporting staff really work with the parents to find our child's needs. Our child came from one of the lowest ranked schools in the state and with the dedicated help of the Lookout Mountain staff really thrived this year. Hats off to LOM

Although this is a public school, it offers excellent academic programs, they involve us (the parents) in all their (the kids) activities, and there are numerous activities and programs for children to be active with outside of the classroom.

My son just started as a new student at Lookout Mountain. His teacher seems very capable and motivating. We have confidence that our son is getting the highest quality education.

Outstanding elementary school. Very active parents and teachers help to ensure the quality of the school.

Lookout Mountain is a great school. They have a variety of programs available for the students. The parent involvement is wonderful. There are many opportunities for parents to volunteer in different ways. My son loves it there!

There are many extracurricular activites that envolve and challange the students. This school has many parent volunteers. The teachers are excellent and have great experience and education behind them.

We have been very happy with the experience my son has gotten at this school. The teachers and staff are great and there is high parental involvment.

I think this school is an excellent school it has helped my daughter excel in every level. She enjoys going to school everyday, been on the principles list, & the Honor roll for the 2 years she's been there.

Wonderful school with dedicated and loving teachers.

Good academic program with focus on community. Excellent teacher parent communication and gifted student programs. I would highly recommend this school for the variety of extracuricullar activities and great music program.

Awsome school! Has great teachers. Great acedemic programs good extracurricular activities awsome parent involvement.

This school is exceptional! My son had some problems transitioning to Kindergarten. Lookout Mountain wanted to help. Rather than wash their hands of the situation, they met with us and came up with a specific plan to help him adjust. We met with two counselors, his teacher, and even the principal got personally involved. I cannot say enough about this school! They certainly made us feel special. I never expected such personal, caring attention to the matter - especially from a public school. They greatly exceeded my expectations. Now my son actively participates in class and no longer fights to go to school in the morning. I wish all schools could be so wonderful!

Lookout Mtn is a fantastic school in a great neighborhood. I am sad to say that I had to move my children when I left the district because the school had no room to accomodate them. The teachers we have had are wonderful educators and the Community of Caring that LOM encourages is terrific.

For the most part I'm very happy with this school. The teachers are great and the parents are very involved. However, the communication from the principal/administration with the parents leaves a lot to be desired. For the past 2 years, I have been unable to get a calendar for the school year until within a few days of the start of school. This year when I called the office to request a calendar, they refused and told me I had to wait until they were sent home with my child during the first week of classes. Also, most schools have an open house prior to school starting so parents can meet the teachers, but Lookout Mountain does not have their open house until after classes have already begun (during the second week of September this year).

Lookout Mountain is the fourth and best school that our kids have attended. We now compare all schools to this one. They have been going to LM for three years now (in 3rd & 4th grade) and we have all loved the school, the staff, the curriculum, etc from the very beginning. Barb Lake is a great, always present, very involved principal. Lookout Mountain's standards and communication with parents is/are excellent. We couldn't be happier with the school and our children's progress. See what merits a 5 rating in all categories. These are specific and precise descriptions of this school's operation.

Lookout Mountain has provided my children with a caring environment balanced with a high-quality education. The school encourages parent volunteerism and involvement which is proven to have a direct impact on children's attention and performance in school.

The community involvement at this school is as good as it gets. The teachers are skilled and very dedicated. It seems to combine the benefits of public education with the parental involvement aspects of a private school.

The Kindergarten curriculum is exemplary. All great things to say thus far for my oldest son's first year of public school. His teacher is more than I could have ever hoped for.
