Sonoran Sky Elementary School Reviews

I am a parent of two kids at Sonoran Sky and both my children and my husband and I are extremely happy with this school. My twins are 4th graders and we have been at Sonoran Sky since Kindergarten and have had a wonderful experience. This school offers wonderful programs, specials and enrichment opportunities that few other schools offer. The school is organized and well-run and the teachers are experienced and caring. My kids have made wonderful friends and the families are all very involved and dedicated to their children's educational experience. I feel that my kids are getting a stellar education. We could not ask for more in an elementary school. We feel very fortunate to be a part of such a thriving, positive, vibrant school community.

I am a parent of a 3rd grader at this school. Both my daughter and myself are excited for yet another fantastic year of learning and friendship. I count my lucky stars each day that we found this school. It is a wonderfil fit, with an awesome staff. Check it out for yourself - you'll be amazed.

We could not be happier with our child's education and our experienced at Sonoran Sky. We transferred here from another Paradise Valley School that is better rated based on standardized test scores, but lacked the academics, character development and warm community of Sonoran Sky. If you can get in through residency or open enrollment, do so immediately. You won't find a better school, or one that better prepares your overall child for his or her future.

Sonoran Sky is an amazing school. They have many levels of education to suit the needs of students. There are regular level classes, pull-out honors classes, and self-contained classes which is a full day honors classroom. The education is really good, and the teachers are so nice. The physical qualities of the school are very clean and orderly. Overall, a great school!

I am so pleased that I enrolled my son into this school from a nearby school. This principal is awesome. He is friendly, demonstrates concern, interacts with the children based on respect and understanding and not authority. He earns and is given respect because he relates well to the parents and children. The staff is friendly and eager to engage the students in learning. Admin are okay. They don't go out of there way, but they will be helpful and pleasant.

We moved to this school through open enrollment when my kids started Kindergarten and 3rd grade. I could not be happier with this choice!! My kids are now in 3rd grade & 6th grade. The principal is awesome - he lets the kids know he really cares by making the rounds and memorizing every kids name! He shows up for off hours events, etc. He's the best!! The teachers, active parents, and extra curricular activies are wonderful too. This whole school is just the best... I dread that my 6th grader will go off to middle school elsewhere. One minor negative is that the dress code could be enforced better, as I know one of my children push the limit and should get called on it by school personnel. With that being my only picky issue, I cannot recommend this school highly enough!!!

We love Sonoran Sky! I was very worried about finding the right school for my highly gifted child, as we had had some problems in the past. However, we enrolled at Sonoran Sky and qualified for the 'self contained program' and love it. It is an answer to our prayers. Ms. Mensing is wonderful and she really goes out of her way to make sure my child is happy and challenged. The special areas at this school are also excellent. We have been nothing but pleased!

Not sure where to begin with all the positive things about Sonoran Sky. This community is truly welcoming & rewarding. We are an out of district family with 2 kids attending & have been here for 5 years. Both have had & continue to have a wonderful learning experience. The teachers are all wonderful in their own ways. There is a 'real' sense of community & a genuine concern to develop and expand the knowledge of all the children who enter the school. Both are excited about their days and what they have learned. The 'Make Your Day' program is a wonderful program that makes each student responsible for his/her actions and responsibilities. 5th grade Sky Camp experience is an excellent 'camp' to develop the kids & have them learn outside the school. 6th grade participates in P.I.L.O.T.S. - a camp & year long 'leadership' experience! Parents are always volunteering!

As my son started approaching Kindergarten I began to 'shot-gun' his open enrollment application anywhere I could think of. Our school district is Laveen Unified, however, the schools are overcrowded, rundown, and teacher turn-over rate was high. I work in Scottsdale so I frantically began searching for schools around my business location. By chance, after taking a remodel job in a neighborhood 2 minutes from my office, I came across Sonoran Sky. It is in the middle of a well developed older neighborhood, a park-like setting with quiet streets. My son could not be happier, even though we have an hour drive to and from school everyday, he LOVES his school and the teachers! Which is what every parent wants to hear! He is also involved with the Enrichment programs after-school and is a member of the Mascot Club before and after-school day care program.

We came from a small charter school in Scottsdale, to Sonoran Sky's self-contained gifted program last year when my daughter was in 2nd grade. We were somewhat apprehensive about the new school and the gifted program. But every day as she hops out of my car, excited to go to school, I feel grateful we found out about this place. The principal Mr. Sweeney is dynamic and positive, and he knows the kids (and their parents); the 'specials teachers' send the kids home with songs, jokes, and unusual projects; both of the gifted teachers we've had (Ms. Mensing and Mrs. Woodard) have been engaging, kind, organized and fabulous at communicating what's going on in the classroom (via email or 'Monday folders'). Unlike some people who jump to Sonoran Sky because they're unhappy, we felt that our previous school was fine; but we're glad we made the switch.

Our family is very happy with Sonoran Sky. Our daughter is in the wonderful self-contained honors program and we couldn't be happier with it. Folks come from all over to gain access to this special program done so well here. The principal continues to impress me. I had an issue with my son, and found his candor and advice impressive. He knows all the children by name and rolls up his sleeves to be welcoming and approachable daily. The PTO is engaged, and the parents are very supportive. I've only had one teaching issue in all my year (and that's to be expected anywhere you go) but it was handled very well. My kids love their teachers and I've been very impressed with their abilities. Student/teacher ratios are also quite good, and that's very important to me.

If you are looking for an amazing place to send your child, look no further! Sonoran Sky is fantastic. We moved into the area just for the school. The teachers are fantastic and the set high standards for the kids. I also love the administration - very hands on and they know each child. Sonoran Sky is great at differentiating education to each child. They are also on top of discipline and structure so that one bad kid does not ruin the year for the rest of the class. I cannot say enough good things about this school - it is simply the best!

I have two children at Sonoran Sky-- a 2nd grader and Kindergartener. The teachers are outstanding and the principal is incredibly 'hands on'. My older daughter attended a private school for Kindergarten and a charter school for 1st grade. After moving into the neighborhood we decided to try Sonoran Sky. Suffice it to say that we will stay. I feel that the quality of education is first rate and my kids love school. What else could I ask for?

We transferred to Sonoran Sky from a local charter school and have been impressed on every front. The principal is truly the 'man on the scene' -- professional, highly visible and obviously dedicated to the faculty and kids. Communication is thorough and consistent. Our son is in the gifted K-2 program and his teacher is gem. We are big fans of this school --so glad we got on board!

Sonoran Sky is an outstanding school. Both of my kids are in the honors program and it truly fits them where no other school could. They caring and flexibility of the staff to make sure every child learns every day is amazing. The principal is engaged and involved and knows the names of nearly all the children, if not all of them. There is a strong sense of community here. Their special programs which protect the kids from the sun and heat as well as solid citizenship programs can't be beat. We'll stay here after searching for several years for a good fit. I am truly grateful for such a great school.

We are no longer happy with Sonoran Sky. The teacher seems disorganized each time we get together. Our son is not doing well, we've seen grades slipping and his attitude is deteriorating. I'm sure he is at least 50% of the problem. We're concerned about the replacement principal's dedication and commitment.

We are actually in the Scottsdale school district and open-enrolled our daughter into Sonoran Sky for 1st Grade (she is in 4th now). All four of teachers have been sensational and the entire staff is extremely interested in her well-being as well as motivating parent involvement. We have been very impressed with the volume of parent involvement and the overall quality of everyone involved with the entire school's community. We would recommend anyone to this school.

I am a student, and this is the best school I have been to from other 5 schools. The teachers are great, the gifted program is the best, but I did have a big problem with bullies, but overall it was a great school.

we absolutely loved the school for the three years we were there. would highly recommend.

We have been extremely pleased with the education that our child is receiving at this school. With the 'make your day' program you know every day how your child did in school. We have been so impressed with all of the teachers and how they take the time to go the extra mile for all of the children. All of the parents are extremely involved in helping the school and everyone is encouraged to participate if you are able. The school has a very welcoming atmosphere and none of the pretentiousness that you see at other schools. I would highly recommend this school.

a good school as far as school go in arizona. of course they are still subjected to test-taking standards which takes away from classroom teaching. the 'make your day' program can be a nuisance if your kid was brought up not to be a tattle tale, or tends to be a little vocal. great teachers and facility though!

Strong academic school with teachers with great tenure. Sonoran Sky brings in a substantial number of outside experts such as artists and dancers. Active PTO allows for added funding for key initiatives. Teachers are strong and are very open to input. Annual Principal's Challenge encourages students at all level to do independent studies. In my opinion, there is an over-reliance on the Make Your Day program which at times serves to be too controlling and time consuming. Good environment. Well kept building. The music program is strong with Mr. Norris a very well-respected and much loved institution. Principal is very active and involved with the children.

fabulous school. very good. teachers are great. I have no complaints

I can't say enough great things about Sonoran Sky. My children have been there for two years after a few years in private school and then a year at a charter school. We love it here. The Citizenship Program used at Sonoran Sky creates a unique atmosphere where children take responsibility for themselves and their actions, something we haven't seen anywhere else. Parent involvement is welcomed, encouraged and appreciated. The teachers we've had have been excellent and I can't remember ever hearing a complaint from other parents. It's warm and welcoming as well as a good learning environment.

Beautiful school, Teachers work hard with each and every student. Children enjoy attending school, including all of the extra activities. No One could ask for a better principal. She was a teacher herself. She was actually my sixth grade teacher the first year Sonoran Sky opened. I loved it then and I love it now. My niece attends 1st grade.

This is a great school the teacher is wonderful.

Academics are challenging but not unrealistic. Wonderful, unique leadership program for 6th graders and exceptional, memorable 5th grade program on America. Very high level of parent involvement and teacher commitment. Great principal.

Needs more extracarricular availabilty to include lower grade sports, orchestra, and make band available to lower grades. Staff is supportive and knowledgable and eager to help keep students interested and challenged.

I feel very fortunate that my children attend Sonoran Sky. It has consistently high test scores, an unbelievably dedicated staff and a principal who has provided great leadership. The school has a wonderful website which helps keep the community informed (http://sonoransky.pvusd.k12.az.us). It's one of the few public schools with self contained honors classes for 4th, 5th & 6th grade as well as 'pull out' honors for Math and Reading. Each class publishes a book in the school's publishing lab (the Secret Garden). There's a wonderful computer lab, a pond with native Arizona fish and flora which the children take care of, and a community which works together really well. After school classes include yoga, math games, dancing, homework club, drama etc. My kids spent a couple of years in a charter school, and I could just kick myself for not enrolling them here sooner!

The best kept secret...Sonoran Sky Elementary! However, it won't be that way for long... The word is out...this is a terrific school! Learn more about their Pre-K class! Hurry.. Soon everyone will know.

From the principal and vice principal to the teachers, administration, janitor, and aides, everyone is professional, kind, hardworking and cares deeply about the kids. I feel so fortunate to have had all three of our kids attend this school.

Sonoran Sky Elementary School, although an A+ school gives me concerns in the environmental area. There aren't any windows in the classrooms and I find this disturbing. I think children should be able to see the great outdoors instead of just gray walls for 6 to 7 hours a day.

I have 2 children currently enrolled at Sonoran Sky. I have been very impressed with the teachers and the students. I like how the kids seem kind, generous, and yes even a little naive. The parents are encouraged to help. There are also many learning opportunities that are outstanding.

I attended this school and it was an amazing expirience.
