Sierra Verde Elementary School Reviews

This school has excellent leadership, from the administration all the way through to the campus maintenance staff. The students are the #1 priority in this community. Parent involvement is extremely high, and the children benefit from that. My children love this school, and their parents do, too!

We are so excited to have our children start school this year at sierra verde. Last year, we saw big changes in the morale, positive communication and overall enthusiasm from all levels of school personnel. The kids love the new Viper pride culture. The new principal is a true leader for the school and her enthusiasm and professional commitment to her students is wonderful! Go Vipers!

As we go into year 2 of our amazing 'new school' (new principal, new teachers, new environment) I can honestly say that I am excited for school to start. I am excited to see what my children will learn this year. All the teachers are working together for the first time in the 7 years we've been there. The teachers can do what they love best - teach! The principal knows each child by name and honestly cares about each one. I feel very proud of my school!

Sierra Verde School, which is and has been a K-8 school since it's opening in 2001 (not a K-5), has always had the potential for being an excellent school. In past years, there has not been open communication between staff and parents, and the community had polarized due to conflict between the staff and the parents. Beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year, we have had new leadership with an outstanding principal, assistant principal, and new teachers. From the outset, it was apparent that a new culture was beginning, and now everyone, from the maintenance staff to the administration, has infused a new, enthusiastic, and healthy environment for the students. Test scores, which have always been high, are now reflective of the team building grade level teachers share. Our principal is a take-charge empowering individual who believes that everyone can succeed. Our school is now a community in the truest sense.

The transformations that have been made at Sierra Verde this year have been amazing. Under new leadership, the school is like a shining star where everyone is working together (students, parents, teachers & the adminsitraiton) to achieve one common goal....Student Achievement. There is a sense of excitement when you walk onto the campus with the kids smiling and the teachers/administration being friendly and available to answer any questions/concerns at there earliest convenience...GO VIPERS!

I have been disappointed in the lack of positive communication in past years. Parents have turned on parents. Teachers have taken sides and Principals have allowed this to turn into a popularity contest, not a place of learning. With new leadership, we can do nothing but improve. For anyone who avoids conflict at all costs, even the expense of kids, will even be surprised to see how quickly a school can be turned around. Hopefully we will then, have the attitude we preach to our kids. Positive

Sierra Verde is undergoing a transformation, starting with top leadership. The new principal appears to have a win-win type of attitude which should reduce the number of parent/teacher/administrator conflicts. Over the past five years, a devisive and insidious force has polarized teachers, parents, and now students and set them up to 'play against each other' instead of 'for each other.' Although students score well on tests, academic research shows that school has only about a 10 percent impact on test scores and these students score well due to the attention their families and parents pay to their upbringing. Students are not academically challenged, the teachers fail to communicate between and across grade levels and, it appears that many the teachers do not follow district guidelines for curriculum. I am hoping for a quick improvement with the new leadership or I will move my children elsewhere.

I have been greatly disappointed in the lack of rigor in the curriculum at this school. The teachers have a generally negative attitude toward parents, students, and each other which makes for poor morale overall. We are currently exploring a private school placement for our children.

We are new to the area. Sierra Verde is an excellent school. You can feel confidant that your child will get an excellent education. The teachers and support is very friendly.

I love this school it has been great for my boys they have chaged and grown so much with the help of the great staff and teachers at Seirra Verde Thak you

This school is under intense pressure at this time, and scutiny. The leadership is under fire, and should be. The teachers are for the most part excellent, which is why is it still an excelling school. It is the leadership that is not excelling. There is no leadership there. Just relationships.

Sierra Verde has now received an excelling rate for it's third year in a row. This is an amazing accomplishment! As a fellow staff member, I can say that without a doubt my children will be attending this school! The administration and office staff are excellent and work for what is best for each child. The other teachers I work with are extremely dedicated and passionate about education as a lifelong commitment. I am extremely proud to teach at this school!

All I have to say is beware this school. I wouldn't send my kids back here if I were paid. My son was made to feel bad about himself by his teacher. I was told not to give up on my son but the school did just that. I feel I was lied to and treated badly by just about everyone in this school. I was very involved in the school. Field trips, parties, volunteering. None of that mattered. I wasn't respected and my son was given a complex about himself. Horrible, horrible, school.

I have a kindergartner enrolled at Sierra Verde and could not be more pleased with his progress. I believe the teachers and administration have engaged and encouraged him during his introduction to formal learning. I am very satisfied with Sierra Verde.

One word to describe this school is help. That's what it needs. Teachers don't care much about real education and are more concerned about judging the children and 'telling' on them rather then guiding and helping them. What a shame. Some children lack discipline and teachers just don't seem to care, they ignore parent issues and don't respond. I will be moving my child to a different school this next coming school year.

Sierra Verde is an excellent school that promotes education, values and citizenship. The teachers are top-notch and the administration is very organized and attentive. I would hightly recommend this school to anyone.

Involved staff, open door policy by administration for all parents and students, very kind and knowledgable office staff, standards based insruction. This is a very parent involved school. Great for non-working parents. Would highly recommend the school.

I am seriously considering removing my daughter from this school. Safety is good at the school, but judging by the way the students behave, I believe that the discipline low.

The staff at Sierra Verde is very dedicated to the highest quality of education for the students as well as their mental/emotional well being!

The academic level here in this school is average. The teachers that I have been exposed to are fairly knowledgeable and acceptable. I have only been exposed to this district for 6 months. I originally came from NY and since I have 3 kids ranging from 6 to 14, I am pretty comfortable in reviewing this school to say that the levels of academics are far from NY but they are acceptable and seem to be trying to come up on their standards.

This is the worst school my child has ever been enrolled in. The only teachers my son enjoyed were mr. S. Medved and mrs. C. Tomlinson, who both had very unique and interesting lesson plans. The staff members are often rude and complaining, and I have no desire to re-enroll my son in a deer valley school.

I think this is a good school and have been happy with my daughter's experience. She has been at SV since 2nd grade and most of her teachers were excellent.

Although the area is nice, and the school is clean, and the office staff is very friendly, this school has real issues with some of its teachers. Some special events were cancelled due to poor planning and other events were totally unorganised. Projects from some teachers were asigned with no real idea of expense to the student, although it was expressed that the cost would be minimal when in fact it was not. Several teachers were not prepared, had no experience and showed little interest in the grade they were teaching. Some of the more experienced seventh grade teachers were very good, and their efforts are appreciated. Our children will not be attending this school any longer.

average school. children are not challenged as much here as I had hoped.

Great school! The principal is very involved, kind and is easy to talk to. We have had some great teachers who really care about the children and take extra time with them. I don't feel that my children are just anonomous students, the teachers and principal really pay attention to them. We have been very happy with the amount of attention given to all issues that come up. I appreciate the summer school and after school classes that are available.

Good neighborhood school- don't have to worry about behavior issues. Teachers take behavior seriously.

I've been very happy with the education my children have received at this school. The teachers have been open and communicative. The office personnel are welcoming as well.

This is a great school with great parent teacher communication. The neighborhood is wonderful and the staff friendly.

This school has been a big disappointment. It is probably fine for most kids, but my son was not challenged at all. The school seems to have set extremly low expectations. My son's class had 33 students so many of his English assignments were not graded for spelling or grammer.

This would make a fine K-6 school. As a substitute for Middle School though it has been horrible. They do not have teachers or administration with any experience handling adolescents and just label them all trouble makers, this in a fairly well-to-do area where the staff has no idea what trouble really is.

Very friendly school.

My son is in the first grade and began the school year reading at the lowest reading level. He is now reading at second grade level and excelling in every academic subject. His teacher is bright and no-nonsense, and is only interested in her students doing their best. I love this school. The campus is always clean and beautiful, the office staff helpful, and they have a terrific before/after school program. I would like to see a little better communication of all of the activities and events, but that would be my only complaint. Finally, although the school is predominantly caucasian, there is a healthy mix of other nationalities, so all races can feel comfortable at this school.

very patient attentive to each childs needs
